About this listen

In one of the most acclaimed novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewed version of contemporary England.

Narrated by Kathy, now 31, Never Let Me Go dramatizes her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship, and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

Stunning

In love with this book, want to read it 100 more times. Beautiful, poetic, stunning.

Eerily brilliant

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes, but I found the narrator quite hard to listen to. Her voice was slightly muffled and I couldn't hear a lot of the words she spoke because of this.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not particularly.

Any additional comments?

This was a great book. A little disappointed with the ending, as I thought more would have been explained. I still enjoyed listening to it, it was a tragic sort of love story. This makes me want to read more of Ishiguro!

Great but could you get on with it?

What did you like most about Never Let Me Go?

It's written in the gentlest terms which only serves as stark relief to the subject matter.

What does Kerry Fox bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Life!

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the whole experience but I just can't help the feeling that this is a short story dragged out into a novel. It moves very slowly at times.

A good read. Thought provoking.

I really enjoyed this book. Beautifully composed, and terribly sad. Great narration

Wonderful and enthralling

Totally lost in the world that Cathy, Tommy and Ruth live in. Narration not great.

Try to avoid spoilers before reading

A lot of the enjoyment in this book is the slow way in which you find out about the world it is set. If you had already watched the film I am not sure if it would be as good.

I really enjoyed it, although I wasn’t too attached to any of the characters.

I didn’t like the narrator much, I found her accent / mild lisp irritating although I guess it did suit the story.

Beautiful and devastating

I love audiobooks and I’ve listened with Audible for several years now. This is the best book I’ve listened to so far. The narrator is amazing— she is so ‘present’, I kept forgetting she wasn’t telling her own, real story. I haven’t seen the associated film so I came to the story fresh. It is beautiful, deeply human, and utterly devastating.

Reading a dream

I found this really rewarding even though I had to keep rereading it from the start. There is a hypnotic quality to the story which becomes more and more revealing in such a subtle fashion. Quite chilling.

haunting

Would you consider the audio edition of Never Let Me Go to be better than the print version?

I think I will be "haunted" by this novel for many years. At times I didn't know whether I loved it or hated it but I could not stop listening. Without knowing why, it was touching something in me and then I realised that we all spend time being carer and/or donors/victims... We are all powerless to our fate. None of us can run away from planet Earth. Most of us have deep attachments which will inevitably be lost. The so-called clones are only too human...

Touching and compelling read...

A touching and compelling read, full of parallels for modern society. Wonderfully narrated by Kerry Fox.
