About this listen
Based on historic events and frighteningly relevant to today’s headlines - a taut thriller about one American diplomat’s year of living dangerously in Tehran in the days leading up to the Iranian Revolution....
In the style of Alan Furst, this suspenseful thriller - based on real events - places an idealistic American diplomat in a turbulent, US-hating Tehran in the days leading up to the Iranian Revolution. Backed by the CIA, and trailed by a beautiful and engaging French journalist he suspects is a spy, David Weiseman’s mission is to ease the Shah of Iran out of power and find the best alternative between the military, religious extremists, and the political ruling class - many of whom are simultaneously trying to kill him.

For those seeking thrilling action, this is not the best choice, so I can understand the disappointment of the critical reviewers. For those like me who like spy novels but are interested even more in history, this novel is unusually satisfying. It evokes convincingly and vividly the Islamic takeover of Iran and the ensuing hostage-taking of American embassy personnel that contributed to Jimmy Carter losing the presidency. I remember hearing about these events on the French radio without understanding their full import. This book unexpectedly filled in all that I missed 43 years ago and much more besides. I enjoyed every word, doubly so, thanks to Stefan Rudnicki who is one of my favorite readers (though he needs work on pronouncing French).
An outstanding work
