About this listen

Shortly after 9.30 in the morning, a young man walks into Surf City, Bondi’s newest shopping complex. He’s wearing a dark grey hoodie - and a bomb around his neck.

Just a few minutes later, he is locked in a shop on the upper floor. And trapped with him are four innocent bystanders.

For police chaplain Paul Doherty, called to the scene by Senior Sergeant Boehm, it’s a story that will end as tragically as it began. For this is clearly no ordinary siege. The boy, known as Ali Khan, seems as frightened as his hostages and has yet to utter a single word.

The seconds tick by for the five in the shop: Mitchell, the talented schoolboy; Mouse, the shop assistant; Kimmi, the nail-bar technician; and Roger Callaghan, the real estate agent whose reason for being in Bondi that day is far from innocent.

And, of course, there’s Ali Khan. Is he the embodiment of evil, as the villagers in his Tanzanian birthplace believe? Or just an innocent boy, betrayed at every turn, who just wants a place to call home?

I felt really sorry for Ali Khan I would have liked more of his background and what drove him into making bombs. I think he could have been helped more he obviously went under the radar which happens all the time.

Very good

This author is an extraordinary story teller. The characterisation is reliably excellent and the pace slow enough to get to know the characters but promising enough to keep you hooked.

The narrator is excellent also and I will forgive the Scottish accent which was a very small part!

A good story, but a bit long winded. I’m also not entirely sure about the hostage situation - it seems to me that he was making no demands, no threats and he was in actual fact being held against his will along with the others…? Maybe I missed something?

Not as good as some of her other books

I don’t expect much from these books in the catalogue because must of them are dreadful. However this book was amazing, the storytelling was great the characters actually interesting. Despite its length it didn’t drag either.

Brilliant

While the subject matter is of course disturbing, the story as a whole was very good. So much misunderstanding & prejudice leading to avoidable tragedy, this tale was deeper than I'd anticipated.

The narrator tried his best, but I found him to be a bit stilted - his Scottish accent was hilarious, but I suspect it wasn't meant to be!
I love Caroline Overington's style of writing - it seems so simple on the surface, but it has hidden depths & is always thought provoking.

I’d recommend this book, it’s not too long or complex, but it is sad & a sign of the times we live in.

There are two sides to every story.

I absolutely LOVE Caroline Overington’s books, an I love this one too. CO always feels like she addresses subjects that are becoming too un-pc to talk about. However I think the choice of narrator is unfortunate. Poor performance!

Great Story, Wrong Narrator

Pretty sure I'd have loved this story, the narration was so awful I really had to force myself to keep listening. Awful accents, awful character voices, awful pronunciation just made my ears cry.

The story (which I'd recommend in written word if you are able to enjoy it that way) is really good. It is about how a whole range of prejudices culminate in a very much avoidable disaster. Characters to love, hate and to flip flop from love to hate and back again.

I'd recommend Audible have this revoiced.

What a shame

It's an interesting and engaging story and at times thought-provoking over the plight of refugees. However, two things about the recording spoiled my overall enjoyment. I found it very irritating that dialogue between two characters had 'he said' "she said' after every interchange or if it was two people of the same gender 'x said' 'said'. The narrator was differentiating between character by the tone of his voice . Secondly there are lots of simulated phone calls with the caller barely intelligible and simulated tannoy announcements that are also difficult to hear. Subsequent to this novel I started to listen to the author's The Cuckoo's Cry but it's also full of 'he said' 'she' said' and simulated phone calls so annoying that I've given up.
The narrator is excllent.

Good story but some of the writing is irritating

This book was nothing like I expected, by the description I thought I would be bored and give up but I’m so glad I didn’t. A simple but beautifully written story with real deep meaning, which has you been in thought. The characters and their backgrounds are interacted into the story, leaving you wondering where this was all leading. The main character, the boy that no one gave a chance, no one cared about becomes fascinating and you really do feel sympathy for.

Wonderful story

I'm glad to say it wasn't a who dunit, or a love story, it had interest and a few twists, enjoyed listening to the narrators voice.
