Summary
The downloadable, digital audiobook edition of Colm Tóibín's new novel, read by Fiona Shaw.
It is the 1960s and Nora Webster is living with her two young sons in a small town on the east coast of Ireland. The love of her life, Maurice, has just died. Nora must learn how to forge a new life for herself, how to give her sons a future as she tries to hold onto the past. And, as Nora returns to memories of the happiness of her early marriage something more painful begins to intrude: memories of her own mother and what brought about the terrifying distance between them.

A beautifully written novel and beautifully read by Fiona Shaw. An absolute delight.
Loved the language … and the reading of the novel.
Not much to dislike in any of Colm Toibins’ writing.

Enjoyable listen
I really enjoyed this book , story line was very catching and the feelings of Nora the mother were very real , and yet strong in an environment where it was difficult for a widow to step out from the norm . The family story was very realistic and the narration was excellent

Audible at its best
Fiona Shaw is the perfect actor to bring this story to life. Her rendering of the many different voices is faultless.

I kept waiting for something to happen!
What does Fiona Shaw bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Fiona Shaw's reading of the story is good - she gives it a secure, steady tone.
Any additional comments?
As an observation of a woman struck with the death of her husband, it's a beautifully drawn piece, but I kept expecting an event of significance to occur - which it didn't. That's probably truer to 'real life' but it leaves me feeling a bit empty.

Excellent
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Fiona Shaw such a good reader and makes all the characters quite distinct. I enjoyed it far more than I would have done if I’d read the book myself, as I couldn’t have done the accents in my head, and it makes such a difference.

simply beautiful
What made the experience of listening to Nora Webster the most enjoyable?
I had put off listening to this book as I thought it might be very sad, but on the contrary as it turned out it was almost humourous, and simply an uplifting experience to have read it.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Well it had to be Nora of course as she was so central to the story.Nora is left young and windowed with four children to bring up. The last two boys are still at school. She is both aided and hindered by the inhabitants of the small Irish town she lives in in the early sixties
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The book comprises of a series of encounters that Nora has with her children, relations, church, school, work, friends, singing teacher or even dead husband. With Each encounter we learn a little bit more of Nora, and with each encounter Nora grows more and more autonomous.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Until finally she is about to emerge from the chrysallis.
Any additional comments?
And you are left, as the story peaks, presuming it will be into a beautiful butterfly

Perfect in every way.
Toibin has written a perfect book about bereavement, grief and recovery. Such subtle portrayal of family relationships. Fiona Shaw is the perfect narrator.

No where near as good as Brooklyn
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
After being thrilled by Brooklyn, I was disappointed by the lack of depth to this story. It had great potential content.
