About this listen

Tom's a prepper, and with his three friends, they embark on a fly-in fishing trip to northern Canada to have a long, relaxing vacation. Things turn deadly when an EMP leaves them stranded and alone 1,000 miles away from civilization. Winter is coming, and they only brought enough supplies for two weeks.

In a hostile land, there's no room for mistakes or illness. One wrong step can prove to be as deadly as the wildlife that has no fear of humans, and that views them as more than a potential food source. Escape by boat or over land would be near impossible.

So much to do, so ill-equipped, and so little time. Follow the four friends in their journey of survival. Survival isn't just an option - It's life or death.

***Spoiler Alert***

This author takes a light-hearted, almost jovial take on an EMP attack and survival situation.  Someone dies, and they're all just joking around like nothing happened.  There's a weird kind of triangle of awkwardness between some of the main characters which quickly gets ironed out, when the difficult circumstances and close proximity would suggest otherwise in reality.  It's more like a drama than a thriller.

Although there's lots of little explanation's into prepper/hunter/survival tactics, I do feel that Tom literally having access to cheat sheets, and the fact that everything comes too easily for him and the group, wasn't that realistic.  Tom pretty much already had everything they needed to survive and what they didn't have was easily found.

There seems to be a running  theme in this author's books where very young women suddenly fall for middle aged men twice their age and it's straight up creepy.  In this book two young sisters 'instantly' fall for two middle aged men at first sight, even fighting over who gets who (as if), meanwhile knowing that their parents are extremely sick.  Then after their parents quickly get pushed out of the picture by 'dying', they carry on 'getting to know' these men like nothings happened, without any mention of mourning for their beloved dead parents, or even being affected by their deaths.  There's no conversation's about their significant age gaps.  The women in this story also seem to be a bit dumbed down.  I feel the women would be cautious enough not to have unprotected sex in an apocalypse situation considering the dangers of giving birth.  Also the narrator did a terrible British accent, he should have just left that alone.

Overall this is a very tame, light-hearted apocalypse story where I believe the author has attempted to avoid any kind of conflict and hardship, where the only real threat are from bears.  Nothing exciting actually happens, and everything that does happen seems very unrealistic to me.

I received a copy of this book for free of my own choosing and am voluntarily leaving a review.
