About this listen

It’s the $10 million heist you’ve never heard of. In a matter of months, dozens of truckloads disappeared from American highways. But what were they carrying? Nuts. Marc Fennell takes you into a rabbit-hole of crime syndicates, stolen identities and private investigators that will change the way you think about food forever. 80% of the world’s almonds are grown in the heart of California but this journey will take you to Italy; the Spanish coast; deep under the earth; and even into space.

A riveting offbeat crime tale. Narrated by Natc Fennell who’s smart and funny. Weaves together organised crime, the cops and private eyes who track it, and the multi-million dollar nut industry based in California’s Central Valley. Takes surprising turns. Has great 70s heist film original music. Makes serious points about the insecurities generated by globalised shipping and the financial pressures brought on agriculture by the 2008 financial crunch.

Bonkers story that makes you question everything and makes you want to eat something other than nuts!

I will never look at an almond the same way ever..

Eye opening documentary on the almond nut industry and how unsustainable it actually is and the effects not only on the environment but the people who live and work in this vast area of California

Great podcast, worth a listen

Some killer stats in there from some great sources. A very easy listen. Well structured, good pace and great storytelling.

Entertaining, informative and a bit worrying.

I cannot recommend this programme highly enough! It’s eye-opening, kinda scary, it feels very balanced and just a fascinating insight into the literally global lies we all buy into every day without realising it. On top of which, Marc Fennell is so easy to listen to -- he comes over as a sympathetic, likeable character -- and this whole set of episodes is just so entertaining. I’ve already recommended this series to other people and I very much hope Audible keep giving him more work because I’d love to hear more from him (I’ve already done the chillis one and that was good too).

Absolutely fascinating — enlightening and entertaining

Excellent series that I would thoroughly recommend. Great interviewing and very good at getting a point across. Well worth the listen.

Nuts !

Initially I wondered why I was listening to this, guys with guns protecting almonds but as the story developed I realised what an important piece this is, giving an insight into agriculture on an industrial scale and the importance of context. The lives of workers, traceability of our food and if something is cheap, who is paying the price? It’s free so give it a listen, and stay with it to the end.

An important listen

nothing was really uncovered. sine people were interviewed, but this didn't uncover what had happened. needs more work

Not much of a story

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Promises much but delivers little. None of the stories or people involved are satisfactorily pursued. The whole thing is used as an opportunity for the reporter to signal his virtues. How angst ridden and caring he purports to be. I won’t be troubling myself with any more of his work. The only reason I have given one star across the board is that I couldn’t leave none.

Disappointed
