A costa de enormes sacrificios, Odín ha acumulado un arsenal de poderes y conocimientos para tratar de impedir el Ragnarök. Sin embargo, la culminación de su omnisciencia solo será posible cuando obtenga el hidromiel de la poesía, un brebaje mágico que concede el don asombroso de la palabra. El dios, informado por sus dos cuervos, Hugin y Munin, descubre que la pócima está en algún lugar de Jötunheim y emprende el viaje a la tierra de los gigantes para hacerse con ella, pero el mago Suttung guarda celosamente el hidromiel de la poesía en una montaña encantada custodiada por su hija, Gunnlod. Esto obligará a Odín a desplegar toda su astucia para intentar hacerse con el bebedizo.
