About this listen
Raiden is the firstborn son and heir to the throne. When his father is injured, the weight of the crown is heavier than ever. At 17 years old, Raiden isn’t sure he can live up to the king’s legacy.
Egan is a dragon who appears human. He works for his family as a blacksmith. The secret he must protect keeps him from getting close to anyone.
After a chance encounter, Raiden discovers Egan’s secret. They form a friendship forged by trust, and it soon blossoms into something neither of them expected. The strength they find in each other may just help them rise up to meet their destinies.

I wasn't sure that this book would be for me, but I can't wait to start book two.
I loved the whole world-building and the characters. Raiden is a Prince and the main heir to the throne, and Egan is a local blacksmith apprentice who's actually a dragon. Egan's secret must be kept as Dragons are not known in this land.
The story develops well, and their friendship grows into a budding romance. There is no happy ending as such as the story continues into books 2 and 3.

Audiobook: Talia Carver makes a good job of differentiating the voices of various characters and has a steady pace to the narrative. Their emotional range in the dialogue is not always great (and the younger aged voices made me laugh a little), but they do give a more matter of fact delivery which allows the story itself to take centre stage. Its a very clean narration that is what you want from any audio book. I certainly felt transported into the story and look forward to the next book.
A great intro to the Dragon King series.

I really love that the sexuality of Raiden and Egan, and their blossoming relationship isn’t a point of contention in the story - and that King Rodick (Raiden’s father) is accepting of this (something that all parents should be).
We have some great side characters too (I particularly liked Raiden’s younger brother) which definitely kept me engaged.
First time listening to this narrator- and I’ll definitely listen to more. Enjoyable and engaging.
Enjoyable start to a series
