About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

On the Black Hill is an elegantly written tale of identical twin brothers who grow up on a farm in rural Wales and never leave home. They till the rough soil and sleep in the same bed, touched only occasionally by the advances of the 20th century.

In depicting the lives of Benjamin and Lewis and their interactions with their small local community Chatwin comments movingly on the larger questions of human experience.

This book is incredible. The descriptions of its people and the countryside they live in are lyrically beautiful, making you feel like a tangibke part of Benjamin and Lewis's world. One of the most spectacular books I have ever read on human nature, love, friendship and loyalty.

A beautiful depiction of brotherly love

First read this 40 years ago and it has lost none of its charm. Listened to it on Audible after going for a walk over the Black Hill. The narrator is a brilliant match - superb.

Pros: Well written and Well presented. Funny at times.
