About this listen

The award-winning author of The Hate U Give returns with a powerful story about hip hop, freedom of speech - and fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you.

Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. As the daughter of an underground hip-hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But when her first song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Bri finds herself at the centre of controversy and portrayed by the media as more menace than MC.

And with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it - she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.

I loved the story. Feels like a sister novel to The Hate You Give, but chronicling another family's stuggle in the 'hood. The narrator helped to make each character come alive

enjoyable and authentic

Different, pacey and plenty of food for thought. The brilliant narration elevated this to a class above and the story line didn't let up once.

I never knew I liked rap until I heard this

Whilst the plot is very predictable and nothing unexpected happens it is a very well written story and well told by the narrator. I really enjoyed it and it’s definitely worth a listen

Predictable plot but well written and performed

Picked up this book after reading and enjoying 'The hate you give"- I recommend it.
The narrator does a brilliant job of bringing this book to life. I enjoyed the relatable aspect of some of the concepts and narrative brought to the story. This makes it easier to read, knowing it could be based on someone's story.

Loved it. Rich, insightful, engaging. A narrative that held me to the very end and characters that one invests in and cares about. Beautiful ly narrated to bring it to life.

Fabulous

At first I absolutely loved it and couldn't stop listening. The narrator did a fantastic job! However, halfway through I started to get annoyed with Bri and her silly decisions and took a break. I'm glad she was able to turn things around. One drawback is the glitch in the Epilogue.

Overall, it's a good modern book that gives insight into rap genre.

I almost didn't finish it....

When I first saw the film The Hate You Give I was told about the book and how amazing it was so I thought to myself let me read The Come Up cause I’m sure it will as good maybe even better and I can say this book did not disappoint.

As a rap fan and a person who loves a good underdog story The Come Up has the perfect mix of both and the way Angie paints the picture of this world is amazing

What a Story!

I actually burst into tears listening to Bri's Ring performance at the end of the book. I had got goosebumps with the earlier raps but that last one - along with the whole message (is that the right word? I feel completely ineloquent) pushed me over the edge! Another 5-star rating from me for an Angie Thomas book. My 5-star rating means: everyone needs to read this book!

Angela Thomas is a genius. Her character-portraits are flawless. Her dialogue sounds completely authentic to me. And yet another outstanding performance from Ms Bahni Turpin.

Flawless

THUG was an amazing book, and On The Come Up is absolutely stunning. The characters are so strong, creating an immersive, well developed world you can just dive right into. The performance of this audiobook competes that, with the actresses performance bringing the story completely to life. Thoroughly enjoyed and couldn’t recommend more. Definitely a must-read!!!
