About this listen
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
The story of a mother's quest to find her children against all odds, set against the epic backdrop of the sinking of the legendary Titanic.
‘Smashing . . . I was hooked on page one and literally could not put it down. I loved all that she wrote about the true story behind this thrilling tale’ JOANNA LUMLEY
Nice, France, 1911: After three years of marriage, young seamstress Marcela Caretto has finally had enough. Her husband, Michael, an ambitious tailor, has become cruel and controlling and she determines to get a divorce.
But while awaiting the judges’ decision on the custody of their two small boys, Michael receives news that changes everything.
Meanwhile fun-loving New York socialite Margaret Hays is touring Europe with some friends. Restless, she resolves to head home aboard the most celebrated steamer in the world – RMS Titanic.
As the ship sets sail for America, carrying two infants bearing false names, the paths of Marcela, Michael and Margaret cross – and nothing will ever be the same again.
From the Sunday Times-bestselling author, Celia Imrie, Orphans of the Storm dives into the waters of the past to unearth a sweeping, epic tale of the sinking of the Titanic that radiates with humanity and hums with life.

A story based closely to real people
I really enjoyed the story telling & the research was just brilliant, I enjoyed the story telling, the singing was a bit rubbish, but part of the story. I found it a bit boring at the start as the characters were established, there was some unnecessary waffling, I’m so happy the female character found her children again.

Good read fascinating postscript
At times I felt like saying "get on with it" in early chapters that provided the back story. Once we got to the titanic chapters the story really did develop and to find interesting 1 hour postscript that the characters were real and how the writer and researcher pieced everything together was amazing.

Fabulous! Definitely not just another Titanic saga
First of all the narration by Celia Imrie was first class - the accents were great and the drama was beautifully done. The story has been thoroughly researched which made it all the more gripping. I loved all the details about Nice, the people, the way of living but to hear the "actual" events through the eyes of different passengers aboard the Titanic was gripping. The suspense rippled through the book and the chapters were well crafted in their order to build on this. The epilogue was very interesting too. I thoroughly recommend this book

Quite a story, based on the truth
An interesting story in the run up to the sinking of the Titanic. Celia has done her research thoroughly. For me the day to day descriptions of Marcellas life go in for too long and I would have liked a bit more of the Titanic. But well worth listening to and I liked it at the end how they summed up their research of the various characters.

Great story and narrator
An enjoyable story that is well narrated, loved the musical additions and the historical bit felt right too. On listening to the notes at the end it seems to be well researched and just little tweaks to make it an enjoyable story and not a non-fiction book. Set in Nice France in 1911 a young woman Marcela has been married to her husband for 3 years and they have 2 little boys, but she is not yet 21. She seems to have been manipulated into marriage by a man who was charming and older than herself and very ambitious. After the birth of the boys he has become controlling and cruel and Marcela is determined to get a divorce, but her husband doesn’t want her to have the boys even though he doesn’t really want them. He just doesn’t want Marcela to have them, while he had custody of them one day prior to the court deciding who would get full time custody he doesn’t return the boys at the end of the day
With Michael’s very suspicious past catching up with him he flees with the children. He books a passage on the new liner cross the Atlantic The Titanic. Will Marcela ever see her boys again.
