About this listen

The brand-new crime thriller from Sunday Times bestselling author, J, D. Robb.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer

On a hot August night, Lt. Eve Dallas is called to a downtown club, where a joint bachelorette party full of love, friendship and laughter has taken a darker turn and ended in a crime scene. One of the brides has been garroted in a private room and lies dead in a pool of blood.

The brutal murder scene was just seconds from the packed dance floor but despite the dozens of people present, useful witnesses prove hard to come by. Someone must know something but no one is talking.

On the surface the two brides had a supportive, tightknit group of friends but when Eve starts to dig below the surface she discovers that everything may not be quite as it seems....©2010 J. D. Robb (P)2024 Hachette Audio UK

Another cracker from JD Robb AKA Nora Robert’s. She never fails to produce good work. I really enjoy her work.

Typical Eve & Rourke.

I've read all of the books in this series, and only listened to 2 on Audiobook. Have to say I don't really like the narrator. Her voice for Roarke makes me cringe - she's made him sound like a stereotypical Irishman (it's a wonder she doesn't pepper his speech with, "for sure, for sure"). Also the voice for Peabody is not how I would've imagined her speaking. She sounds like she was bought up in the Bronx - she's not a native of New York (perhaps the narrator hasn't read the earlier books?). I listen to a lot of books on audio (as well as reading a fair few as well), and even though the audiobook is slightly cheaper than the new release on Kindle, I think I'll wait to read the next one when the price is reduced.

The story for this one was very slow, but it was interesting to hear more of the dynamics of the main characters that are always to be found in any Eve Dallas story. In real life I think they would've closed this case much quicker - it was really drawn out, and could have been a short novella, instead of a full-blown Eve Dallas crime novel.

Could've been condensed into a Novella

Well below the usual standard for an Eve Dallas book, where was the excitement, twists and turns I listened to the end but was disappointed.

Disappointing

I have listened to all of the Eve Dallas stories. Many have been absolutely fabulous, sadly this one isn’t. Where was the usual twist and turns? Where was the complicated plot? The pursuit of the killer was slow and rather dull, and to be honest, I knew who was from the beginning.

JD Robb is turning out a new story every six months. Perhaps she needs to take a bit more time working on a plot lines because I was very disappointed with this book. Sorry.

Below par

The cruel and vicious murder of a woman in her hen night involves Dallas in another emotional and, complex case. It was great to meet Crack again. The story, writing and narration are all superb. Love these books.

These books never disappoint

Way too much of the book was taken up with characters sitting around having conversations. very little by way of actual plot. very weak motive for the murder and little to no investigation required to unmask the killer, Dallas just bullied him into confessinh which could have been done after 2 or 3 chapters. A weak effort in this series

good performance

This started off - and stayed - slow, for longer than I expect from an Eve Dallas story, so there just wasn’t the same drive to keep on listening to just one more chapter as usual. But I enjoyed it quite a bit and that’s what matters.

I didn’t think this was one of Susan’s best narrations either - Peabody especially wasn’t as distinctive as usual I thought, but again, I enjoyed it enough.

Quite a good listen

You can rely on this series for providing solid entertainment. This book was a little less entertaining for me than the majority of the others in the series because I like the engagement with the characters and this book had less of that and there was really only the focus on the one crime.
Still worth a listen though and the narration is always excellent.

Consistent
