About this listen

On his way to his betrothal, young Lord Penric comes upon a riding accident with an elderly lady on the ground, her maidservant and guardsmen distraught. As he approaches to help, he discovers that the lady is a Temple divine, servant to the five gods of this world. Her avowed god is the Bastard, "master of all disasters out of season", and with her dying breath she bequeaths her mysterious powers to Penric. From that moment on, Penric's life is irreversibly changed, and his life is in danger from those who envy or fear him.

Set in the fantasy world of the author's acclaimed novels The Curse of Chalion, Paladin of Souls, and The Hallowed Hunt, this novella has the depth of characterization and emotional complexity that distinguishes Bujold's work.

More wonderful World of the 5 gods

This is a lovely little novella about how young Penric comes by a demon and learns to work with “her”. Plenty of strange otherworldly occurrences and even peril. A typical young man with an ancient guide makes for great entertainment.

Thoroughly enjoyable story

As a great fan of the Vorkosigan Saga I have always wanted to read Bujold‘s Penric and Desdemona series. Now I’m asking myself why on earth did I wait so long? I was captivated from the beginning and just wish this beautifully narrated story would have been longer, but the next one is already in my basket and I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the series!

love this

This is a great start to Penric's adventures. Very sympathetic character, and the book is well written and well read. it's short, but there are sequels!

Ms Bujold is one of my favourite writers

Audiobook read by Grover Gardner 15/06/24
It was good to revisit the first Penric novella via audible. It's a long time since I read it. I'd forgotten a lot of the detail and later novellas skip over Penric's initiation into holy orders. The story is excellent. I love Bujold's work and will listen to it regardless, but I could wish she had a different reader for the Chalion books (and the Vorkosigan ones) but she or her publishers obviously have a relationship with Grover Gradner. He's a good reader, who has narrated over a thousand books, but I find his voice very heavy and a bit grating for this type of book. It feels much older than the character he's voicing - which, indeed, it is (I looked him up, he was born in the mid-50s.) Penric is only 18 in this novella while Gardner was approaching 60 when he read it. Also it's a second world fantasy setting and Gardner's voice is heavily American.

I’m hooked

As a huge fan of the Vorkosigan Saga, I had high hopes and high standards going into this.

Happily, they were both met.

That’s not to say this is a match of A Civil Campaign or Memory, but I’m definitely hooked and excited to hear more.

Fun and sweet

Penric and his demon are fun to spend time with. Short, so not great value unless it’s free, but sweet.
