Five years ago Joah was culled -- kidnapped by the government to be trained as a soldier. In the process, they erased his memory, destroying his past, his dreams, everything but his name. Armed with that alone, Joah escapes from the facility in search of someone to help him recall the man he used to be.

That person is Tobin, Joah’s husband, who never gave up hope of finding him again. He refuses to believe that the strength of his love alone won’t be enough to bring back Joah’s memories of their shared lives, and he’s determined to bring back the man beneath the soldier, the man he knows has to love him.

But an alarm in the chip blocking Joah’s memories was triggered at his escape, and if it isn’t removed soon, it will shriek his life away. Removing it won’t bring back his past, and may destroy the present that Tobin has tried so hard to build between them. How can the love they once shared possibly survive?

This is the first story I’ve listened to by this author. It is a short story so it could not get the in depth of a longer story. I found the author did a great job of providing enough information that I could get a real feel for the characters.

This is set when people are sort of kidnapped and held as slaves to be soldiers. Their memory is erased. Joah insisted he be taken rather than his husband Tobin. Then Joah escapes.

While Tobin lived with hope to be reunited someway, Joah only remembered his name. Joah escapes and finds his way back to Tobin.

I feel the story needs to be longer to see how it plays out. I was waiting for the chipped Joah to be found. I felt that the relationship with Ash is unfinished. I liked the story but just felt it would have been better if it was a little longer.

The narration by Nick Johnson fit the characters and helped give feeling to the location and situation.

I went into this audiobook knowing very little, but I enjoyed the author’s fantasy story Waylaid, so I was absolutely willing to give this audio a shot. I’ll start by saying I’m really enjoying Nick Johnson’s narrations of J.M.’s books. He delivers solid and enjoyable performances.

Onto the book. The story was compelling. A man culled – stolen by his own government – who has his memories erased and is trained to be a soldier. Stuck in some kind of prison for five years. All the while, knowing this isn’t the life he was meant to have. The book begins with him escaping and the harrowing journey that escape leads to.

Then we meet Tobin. But Tobin through Joah’s eyes. Joah is the only point of view character in this novella. Tobin is a nice man who claims they are married. A man who tends to his husband’s wounds and stays by his side. A man who understands that the only way for Joah to be truly free is to have the chip in his head removed. And a man who understands the procedure might kill Joah – or permanently damage him.

Risks Joah’s willing to take. He desperately wants his memories back. He’s slowly building new ones with Tobin, but he wants to be the man he once was.

I’ll leave it at that. J.M.’s brand of storytelling is unique and even though the story was written thirteen years ago, it stands the test of time. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Based on the blurb I very nearly passed this by but I'm so glad I didn't.
A glorious, romantic tale of a man who has lost everything, his home, his lover, his memories, all taken away by a shady branch of the military. But he escapes and somehow finds his way home.
I can't tell you how beautiful this was once he was reunited with Tobin. It pulled at my heartstrings and brought tears to my eyes.
The narrator was excellent, enhancing the emotional impact with his performance.
I beg you, read or listen to this, you won't regret it.

A short but enjoyable MM Dystopian Romance that tugs on the heart-strings and has you hoping for a happy outcome. Joah escapes from the prison where all his memories except his name had been erased. He manages to find his way ‘home’ to Tobin, the man he loved before. Joah has no recollection of the people or places he now confronts, but he wants to claim back his life as it was before. I would have liked a bit more depth to the story, but it is good as it stands. Nick Johnson narrates the story very well.

Excellent narration, fitting the plot and characters well.
Story - 4.5 stars. The setting in a strange dystopian world was more the background and the reason for Joah losing all his memories except his name and a wish to find the familiar. More didn't fit into the length, but it worked for me. Somehow, Joah managed to find his way back to Tobin, and they fell in love all over again, even though his memories didn't return. The last part was particularly powerful, and I needed tissues for the beauty of the ending.
