About this listen

Whether you live in a mountain cabin or a city loft, plant spirits present themselves to us everywhere. Since its first edition in 1995, Plant Spirit Medicine has passed among countless audiences drawn to indigenous spirituality and all things alive and green. In this updated edition, Eliot Cowan invites us to discover the healing power of plants - not merely their physical medicinal properties, but the deeper wisdom and gifts that they offer.

Enriched by many new insights, this guide unfolds as a series of chapters on how plant spirit medicine helped Cowan resolve specific challenges in his own healing journey and in his work with others. In the telling, we learn how plant spirits can directly communicate with and aid all of us, including:

  • Plant spirit medicine's five-element view of healing
  • Ways to assess our own states of health and balance
  • Receiving guidance from plants, including those found within herbal preparations
  • New passages on community and sacred plants such as peyote, marijuana, and tobacco
  • Additional interviews with plant shamans across diverse traditions, and more

Amazing collection of knowledge

The author understands the philosophy of this pretty well, and he explains it well, and tells us interesting anecdotes - and provide quite a few of these "thought exercises".
Though, he is VERY caught up in this post-colonial modernist mentality, where "white people" is really a legit term for some sort of (imaginary) homogeneous group of people.
He also goes on about this badly flawed mindset about "natives" as some sort of noble savages, that has an inherent peculiar connection to nature - almost automatically, just because they are of s specific group of people.

In reality - there are plenty of (New World) "natives" that are far removed from anything natural and spiritual, with zero respect for nature - just as there are WHITE northern European "natives", who on the contrary are well versed in plant medicine, and who have a holistic spiritual view with close ties to the ways of nature.

It's about time this "noble savage vs materialistic white man" is done with, and replaced by a less narrow minded and prejudical point of view.

Good, mostly.

I am not a healer, but at this point in time my intuition tells me that this is the wisdom so desperately needed for our time. I loved this book - everything about it!
