Years ago I read the paperback and absolutely adored it. What a pleasant surprise to find it free on audible! How wrong I was. The reader makes the prose dull, protracted and excessive. The quality of the recording seems to be set to maximum ASMR. I can hear the reader's tongue peeling from the roof of his mouth with every other word. A very strange decision.

The narrator is annoying and monotonous. The story is meandering and lengthy. Not the worst book I've ever listened to but those two things combined make for a poor experience.

I decided to listen to this audiobook after watching the film. The film is fantastic, and the concept has always stuck with me, so I was looking forward to 'reading' the original book.

Don't bother.

The narration is perfectly boring for falling asleep to, but hard work to listen to attentively. The writers style is tedious - he comes across as trying to be edgey but it's just dull and weird. He should have some credit for having ridiculous and laughable random quotes: "Let us not be seagulls" is a personal favourite, as well as something about a woman's breasts natural purpose being to 'feed babies and frolick alone in the woods'.
There are unpleasant, gratuitous scenes discussing bestiality and icest. They don't add anything to the storyline and feel like they're just there for some tedious shock factor.

Overall, don't bother listening to this. Pick a better audiobook and if you want to hear the good bits from this stories concept watch the film "Pontypool".
