About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Post Mortem by Gary Bell, read by Hugh Kermode.

Can Rook keep his criminal past a secret when facing the most dangerous case of his life?

Thirteen men have died in a London prison. Barrister Elliot Rook QC, who risks losing everything if his secret criminal past is revealed, must defend Charli Meadows, the vulnerable single mother accused of smuggling the deadly tainted drugs inside.

But just as Rook becomes suspicious of those closest to Charli, a note arrives at his flat – threatening violence if the trial is not called off.

While Rook battles to defend Charli and protect himself, his young protégé Zara Barnes is fighting for her livelihood. In a few short weeks, only one tenancy at the legal chambers will be available to the ever-multiplying mass of pupils. Determined to make it hers, Zara takes on her biggest solo case yet.

But will her gamble pay off?

Great storyline and narration

If you enjoy Tony Parsons Max Wolfe and Simon Michaels books this is for you. Storyline has similar pace and content you could almost be reading/listening to them. Recommended

A tour de force.

The unlikely duo power through two complex cases that turn out to be linked. All the characters are fully realised and move the story forward at a cracking pace. The legal details create a vivid sense of place and though the final plot twist comes as a shock you realise the information was in front of you all the time. A terrific story expertly narrated. I’m looking forward to number three in the series.

Well that was unexpected!

I bought this book on an Audible special 2 for 1 deal or I maybe wouldn’t have chosen it, I’m so glad I did! Great story and narration, what a pleasant surprise! the twists and turns from a totally different perspective gave this book a fresh look at crime and who done it. My only disappointment is that this is book 2, no sign of book 1 or any subsequent books from this author on audiobook. The insight into how our legal profession works was fascinating and very entertaining, the lead characters cavalier attitude to his position within that profession, together with his unconventional sidekick, kept me smiling and gripped to the story. No second guessing the plot as the approach was new and refreshing. Well done Gary Bell for a really good listen! More please Audible!

A rollercoaster of an ending!

Just like the first book , this novel is intricate, informative and funny. It cocks a snook at aspects of the judicial service and process, whilst paying respect to it, at the same time. A thoroughly enjoyable tale, that is hard to stop listening to, until the end. I do hope there is more to come, from Rook and Barnes.

Wonderful legal thriller

Beautifully written with well crafted characters. Great description of the way the courts and lawyers operate in realistic detail. The plot is convoluted and well worth listening to! Can’t wait for the next one! Narrator is excellent and complimented the story well.

Great read

I must admit I wasn’t overly impressed with the first book in this series but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I much prefer this sort of of storyline to the slick American lawyers. Maybe a little far fetched but I enjoyed it. I sort of suspected the eventual villain but was still surprised when they were finally revealed at the end. Likeable characters and the narrator is growing on me.
