Scary

Looking at the photo of the 3 smiling teenagers - who seem so wholesome and innocent - it is shocking that two of them plotted and then killed the third. In this rather long and terrible story, the repeated use of verbatim Twitter posts from the girls shows how dark and self possessed the teen world can be. How entitled and detached from reality in some cases. A few times in the story one or other of the 3 is described as “little girl”. I fully appreciate that to the parents in this tragedy their daughter is their little girl but these are not young innocents. Sneaking out late to joy ride, smoke pot, 2 were sexually active, one seemed to take pleasure in running down small animals on these late night jaunts - these were not “little girls”. Their self centred, attention seeking, immature, horrible tweets shows they were not adult either. There is something about the teen brain that thinks and acts differently. Most however do not think it is acceptable to plot between two of you to murder a third “friend” because a) you don’t want to be fiends with her any more and b) she might reveal your secrets (which seem to be the fact that the two murderers had sex together in front of their friend, who filmed it and threatened to expose them). Who does that?? The tweets made me mad just hearing them. This was some time ago now but all those poor me / try to work out what I am saying / attention seeking / hashtag laden messages are revolting. One of the girls had been found to have sent thousands of messages over something like 3 days. What a waste of time and energy. All those parents who despair of their teens constantly nose in phone tapping away - I feel for you. Mine were teens just before smartphones so at least they were limited to laptops. At least one of the murderers showed no remorse. What kind of person kills a supposed friend and has no remorse. Hard enough to imagine one 16 year old actually going though with this. Two is almost unbelievable. The poor parents. It hurts my heart to even imagine…..

Reminded me of Ann Rule books

The social impact of the case with little time spent on graphic details. I found it an interesting listen.

Devastating story about what happened to Skylar Neese

This was a really interesting but devastating look into what happened to Skylar Neese at the hands of her killers.
I would have personally liked if the book had focussed more on Skylars background before her death, and the person that she was, as the story made her come across bad in points and no one deserved what happened to Skylar and the focus should more have been on that, although I appreciated hearing about how kind she was to animals and how she was kind to the LGBTQ+ community.
I think we had too many perspectives in the book and I would have appreciated it being narrowed down.
I thought the narration was great. Very well paced.

i am writing this 2 and a bit months after the horrifying slaying of 4 students from a uni in Moscow Idaho.
the hallmarks of the book Pretty Little Killers has so many similarities with the ongoing case in Idaho. whether it be the social media attraction or the silenced hush hush by the UNI itself or the drugs problem that the UNI has, the similarities are overwhelming . this book uncovers more that people realise and those reasons need to be looked into more to avoid other situations arising alike this. whether it be drugs, peer pressure or pure bullying, these Unis need to start caring for their students and addressing these problems rather than hiding them from public view just for stats.

Such a sad story

So young so sad young girls killing a young girl just so sad all just starting life sums the world really sad world we live in just look at the other comment on here and what it says about the poor girl who got murdered

Learnt a lot from this book

Most of the documentaries on this crime are quite sensational. I found the detail to be just right in terms of examining the facts of the case and its impact on the community, the police handling the case and the Neese family and friends. I learnt a lot of things I never knew and this book also corrected a few half-truths propagated by other media.

Frightening to consider

Horrendous story of spoilt little teenage girls, spite and nasty they murdered a “friend” in cold blood because they didn’t want to hang out with here anymore. The lies and deception goes on for months before they get caught and it keeps you invested in the story if only to see them get caught and charged.

A sad case of kids killing kids, no apparent reason other than they did.
The book was very in depth and although not confusing it did jump back and forth in the timeline, would have been better from start to finish rather than jumping around.

The Lad who loved Skylar, he seemed really sweet, kind and genuine.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, to be honest. I didn't like Skylar, I thought she was demanding, jealous, controlling and someone who would blackmail friends in order to keep them as friends, dangling the threat of exposure like a nasty old carrot. The three girls were typical bratty singletons , and the issues that singletons have when children is a 'mine mine mine' demeanour when they mature the unwillingness to share is just as prevalent and in this case it ended in disaster.

Compassionate

I think that the author has described the tragedy with compassion and explained well most probably causes. It gives s glimpse in the complicated world of changes in a teenagers social world.
