Author decided to drop it prematurely

I hate that author decided to change the direction of the book in the last 2ish hours. Clearly the trial and sea was supposed to be a much larger story, spanning another book or two. Perhaps even a "lost" episode - but author had hit a writing block and decided to end it here. Why all my favourite stories ending before their time? T_T
