About this listen

Yeah, yeah, the usual. A crime. A corpse. A killer. Heard it. Except this stiff happens to be a Ponsonby, scion of a venerable Edinburgh medical clan, and the manner of his death speaks of unspeakable things. Why is the body displayed like a slice of beef? How come his hands are digitally challenged? And if it's not the corpse, what is that awful smell? A post-Thatcherite nightmare of frightening plausibility, Quite Ugly One Morning is a wickedly entertaining and vivacious thriller, full of acerbic wit, cracking dialogue, and villains both reputed and shell-suited.©1996 Christopher Brookmyre (P)2004 Time Warner AudioBooks Action & Adventure Modern Detectives Mystery Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Scary Funny Suspense Witty Fiction

Quite brilliant

The 'Only Fools & Horses' of detective fiction - with un-deleted expletives! A huge belly laugh from start to finish. I can't wait for the next instalment.

Jarring music the downside.

I liked the story, I enjoyed David Tenants performance, but it's regularly broken up with annoying music that is jarring and often fades in over the narration. Still enjoyed it, but I'd have preferred a version without the music.

So cleverly written

How does a writer make you laugh out loud when reading about a grusome murder? Easily!

Violent, but...

The book starts off with pretty graphic depictions of violence. I nearly didn’t get beyond those, but I persevered and, though there is more violence and the like in the rest of the book than I like or would usually tolerate, you’d have to say that it’s a good story, often amusingly told, and David Tennant’s performance is absolutely brilliant.

Fantastic, compelling, entertaining

Expertly narrated by David Tennant, this gripping story is the perfect mix of characterisation, plot and social commentary.

Slightly marred by the repetitively shredding guitar.

Tennant is fantastic. Probably the best narrator I’ve heard across any and all audiobooks.

The shredding guitars between chapters can get in the sea though. Good lord, who thought that was a good idea?

Enjoyable Listen

The performance by David Tennant is definitely a highlight. The story is solid and has enough to keep you intrigued and also wraps up well at the end. The characters feel real and the Scottish slang/ banter is spot on, the main character Jacks dark humour is laugh out loud at points.

The musical breaks between chapters - I can't decide if I liked them or not. Also, there is a section where the music plays when it's not supposed to over Tennant's performance which was a little disappointing as it's an otherwise high-quality recording and edit.

it's worth noting that this is the first in a series of Jack's stories and the rest are not narrated by David Tennant - I am a few hours into the second book but the performance is just not delivered nearly as well in my personal opinion.

All in all this book is definitely worth a listen to see if you are interested in Christopher Brookmyre it has certainly made me want to explore more of his work

Why the bloody music?

Love this book. It was the first Chris Brookmyre book I read at the advice of a friend.
I have it in hardback and on my iPad. So why the bad review?
First the bloody awful screeching throughout the book make it impossible to listen to! Secondly the book has been chopped so much to bits it’s almost like one of the victims of the book. It has been cut so much that a lot that’s left doesn’t make sense.
It appears to be the only abridged book in the Chris Brookmyre series on audible.
I beg you if you haven’t read it ( or if you have) don’t buy this book. It’s a shame as I love David Tennet and I’m sure he doesn’t like his name attached to such a poor piece of work

Not for the squeamish

but you know what you are getting with a Brookmyre. Enjoyable as always, he was recommended to me as an Scottish Carl Hiaasen, and that is a good description.
This is about the fourth or fifth of his I've listened to, and for some unknown reason, has very intrusive musical interludes between chapters. I do hope the bloke who thought this was agood idea has been fired, because it isn't.
