Raised Eyebrows is the bittersweet story of the last years in the life of Groucho Marx, told by a young Marx Brothers fan who was fortunate enough to work for Groucho as his personal secretary and archivist, right inside Marx's Beverly Hills home. In addition to getting to know his hero, the author was able to spend quality time with Zeppo, Gummo, Mae West, George Burns, Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, SJ Perelman, Steve Allen, and scores of other luminaries of stage, screen, TV, and literature.

The downside of this dream-come-true was getting close to his idol as the curtain was coming down, and dealing with Erin Fleming - the mercurial woman in charge of Groucho's personal and professional life.

Raised Eyebrows is filled with never-before-heard anecdotes.

I listened to this wonderfully honest what I'd call a diary......... making this feel real & walking in Steve's footsteps. Groucho, I always felt he's a fun & luverly guy before I started reading Steve stoliars book.
I may listen again, loved the what happened after those years . Thankyou for such an enjoyable & addictive read x

A fascinating story regardless of how much you know about or care for the comedy of Groucho. Beautifully written in intimate honesty without being at all exploitative. A book about old age, mental health, faded glory and the joyful gift of being a true fan. I would give 10 stars if I could!

Groucho was in his twilight days, and was controlled by a crazy woman. Steve who wrote this was there and watching all this happen. It was beyond his control to stop it, but I think he treated Groucho with respect. A good read.

No matter how accurate the retelling of events that occurred within the walls of Groucho’s Hollywood home, there is no getting away from what a spiteful book this is.

Yes, the author loves Groucho and defends his casual homophobia and sugar coating anything about him that could be perceived as unacceptable. But the worst crime is that this is a revised edition and should have been better. There is nothing of substance here, Groucho apparently only ever spoke in short pithy witticisms which by any standard aren’t that funny. They occur so frequently you begin to wonder if it’s just an excuse for the author to perform his impression.

By far the biggest failing of this hagiography is the authors treatment of Erin Fleming. He hates her and refuses to treat her fairly. Her behaviour was atrocious however we know she suffered from a sever mental illness and yet even when he admits it the author casually throws it away as though it’s no big deal or contributory factor. Knowing this wouldn’t have changed the story but it could have lead some empathy or perspective in the writing. But no, the best you get is he occasionally felt sorry for her but also felt she deserved what she got - which was destitution and ultimately suicide.

The author is nothing more that a super fan without the intellect to be objective.

Avoid.
