About this listen

Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel, Red Mars is the first book in Kim Stanley Robinson's best-selling trilogy. Red Mars is praised by scientists for its detailed visions of future technology. It is also hailed by authors and critics for its vivid characters and dramatic conflicts.

For centuries, the red planet has enticed the people of Earth. Now an international group of scientists has colonized Mars. Leaving Earth forever, these 100 people have traveled nine months to reach their new home. This is the remarkable story of the world they create - and the hidden power struggles of those who want to control it.

Although it is fiction, Red Mars is based on years of research. As living spaces and greenhouses multiply, an astonishing panorama of our galactic future rises from the red dust. Through Richard Ferrone's narration, each scene is energized with the designs and dreams of the extraordinary pioneers.

More fiction than science fiction very to date of how hard to live on Mars, the planet atmosphere and people trying to live there and with each other

Best book I've read,

I found the setting believable and the knowledge of mars and space in general very interesting. However the storyline and narrative were all over the place and I found it hard to engage with any of the characters and even to finish the book. It sort of just faded out with nothing really happening and left me bewildered as to why I had bothered at all.

Not what I expected.

Comprehensive and full-on descriptions of the environment and situations which does at times distract from the actual story line, making it feel long winded. Also occasionally the narration seems to make a slight pause or break as if it's the end of a paragraph but then continues as the same sentence, which can be a bit jarring to the listener. An ok story but not sure if I will be getting the next book in this series

Full on descriptions which distract from the story

If the first colonists of mars don't read these books first, then they will be on mars un prepared for life there, its like this unready is in kims mind, an easy listen loved description of Arabian culture in ch 1 and how arabs took to mars a cold day in barren quarter!!! Excellent

Was great at every point and gave a varied look at what life would be like on mars and how it develops.
Though it very fall on and takes a while to get through

Outstanding!

A little research by the narrator would have fixed so many pronunciation issues. Elysium pronounced Allyszhum is really annoying

Greatest Hard SciFi Story hampered by narrator

The book was great, took some time to get into and get going. Not dissimilar to an ursula le guin book, which you could expect from Kim as she was his mentor. What took a lot of persevering was the audio editing, the audio chapters are only broken up into 8 chapters, even though you can clearly hear the pauses where a chapter began & ended but wasn't edited to include it as such. This makes chapters several hours long making it awkward to dip into a chapter here and there.

Excellent book terrible audio editing

This was my fourth run through Red Mars (the other three times being in book form at various times over the last 15 years) and I loved it just as much as before - convincingly messy future history filled with characters who don't fall into easy categories of good or bad, and science & geography on a mind-boggling scale. So grand. But a special mention due for the late Richard Ferrone's narration here, which is so terrific - some of the best audiobook work I've heard. This was the first time I've heard one of his performances and now I understand why they're much-loved.

Sweeping story, superb narration

This is a dense, technical, beast of a book. But, so totally worth it to reach the ecocritical masterpiece below the surface.

A long read, but totally worth it
