About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Inspiration from one of the least known but most terrifying moments in modern history - when the fate of the world lay with a lone, nervous Soviet naval officer 100 meters under the Caribbean sea - lies at the heart of this breathtaking new Cold War thriller from the author of the acclaimed Black Sun.

The year is 1962, and KGB Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vasin is searching for ghosts: for evidence of the long-rumoured existence of an American spy embedded at the highest echelons of Soviet power. But it's while on this wild goose chase, a high-stakes espionage race against a rival State agency, that Vasin first hears whispers of an ominous top-secret undertaking: Operation Anadyr.

As tensions flare between Nikita Khrushchev and President Kennedy over Russian missiles hidden in Cuba, four Soviet submarines - each carrying tactical ballistic missiles armed with thermonuclear warheads - are ordered to make a covert run at the US blockade in the Caribbean....

This has been the best performed and superbly written title for me yet. Didn't want it to end!

Superb!

What an incredible novel, part fact part fiction and a haunting evocation of just how close we came to nuclear war in the Cuban Missile Crisis. The narrator is superb, holding the listener from the opening paragraphs until the fascinating historical analysis at the end of the novel. I will also mention the author's previous novel "Black Sun" which is equally good.

A superb thriller

Another story weaving history with some fictional characters. Wonderfully narrated by Mark Bramhall. Looking forward to his next book in this series.

Another Stunning Book

Based on true stories this tells of events surrounding the Cuban Missile crisis. One story set in Moscow tells of Russian individuals attempts to warn the west while the rest takes place on subs off Cuba. It’s brilliantly told and the author notes are a history lesson in themselves

Fascinating

A gripping account, based upon the real events in 1962 that brought Man to the brink of nuclear war. The details of the submarines and the crew, the conditions in the subs and the battle of egos make this a terrific story. How the pragmatism of one man saved the world from potential anihilation. This book brings an important period in contemporary history to life.

Terrifying account of follies of nuclear weapons

In a world overpopulated with ex SF wanna be spies this book stands out. It returns us to the cold war and the well meaning attempts of Super Powers to win the eternal game. This book has echoes of the Le Carre anti hero and the frisson of being based around real events.

The reading is well paced and clear. An excellent listen.

Great story well told!

Disliked the times and dates narrative preceding each chapter. Enjoyability of story and narrative - 100%

Totally engrossing story, brilliant narrative, different character voices nothing short of excellent.
