About this listen

The Bookshop in Wigtown is a bookworm's idyll—with thousands of books across nearly a mile of shelves, a real log fire, and Captain, the bookshop cat. You'd think after twenty years, owner Shaun Bythell would be used to the customers by now.

Don't get him wrong—there are some good ones among the antiquarian porn-hunters, die-hard Arthurians, people who confuse bookshops for libraries and the toddlers just looking for a nice cosy corner in which to wee. He's sure there are. There must be some good ones, right?

Filled with the pernickety warmth and humour that has touched listeners around the world, stuffed with literary treasures, hidden gems and incunabula, Remainders of the Day is Shaun Bythell's latest entry in his bestselling diary series.

A tale of moving boxes north of the Border.

A slow-burner to start, this lovely tale of bookselling in Wigtown charmed and interested me. The characters are well delineated and I honestly didn’t want it to end.

Just Brilliant!

Another laugh out loud diary from Shaun Bythell, I absolutely loved it as I did his previous diaries, well worth a credit.

Be like me and read all the things

Remainders of the Day by Shaun Bythell of @WigtownBookShop. This book is another grower, not a show-er. The protagonist reads like a character in a #LitRPG novel and the bookshop's takings reads like a #LitRPG stats sheet.

But 🎶 @PeterKennyVoice's performance cuts through the confusion and brings the book into a place where you can feel the warmth of the #bookshop. It's a piece of literature that could be seen as a boring story at times given the sheer amount of raw data 🧮 the author gives you.

However, eventually you begin to see the bookshop 📔 for what it truly is: a wonderful place for enthusiastic book owners and book buyers alike. It is a place that allows all folks to congregate around books and book hunters 🧐 to go in search of rare treasures.

This is a dutifully and well-crafted book about the art of caring for, loving and restoring old books. 📚5/5 ⭐️ #BookReview #BookRecommendation #BookTwitter

So good I'm going to Dumfries 😄

I accidentally stumbled across Diary of a bookseller and thought I'd give it a go, and I loved it, so I was delighted to find there was more, I wasn't disappointed. I was equally pleased to realise we're going on holiday to the area shortly and will be paying a visit to Wigtown and the book shop. I enjoy the diary aspect and the end of day totals. I am a book reader but don't always have time, so I've been listening while I drive, which gets me funny looks when I start laughing on my own in the car.

Another enjoyable read from Shaun Bythell.

I love Shaun’s humour and so enjoy his diaries, it’s an interesting insight to the running of a unique book shop. I hope he never stops sharing his diaries.

Throughly enjoyed the book.

This is my second book by the author ( first was an actual book). I have to say the narrator , in my opinion, does not work for this book at all. I guess the author had a hand in choosing the narrator so That’s blessing enough I guess. I just found the narrator difficult to understand ( I thought I had sped up the book accidentally ), I feel it got easier to follow him as the book progresses. The book is wonderful and funny so worth overlooking the narrators delivery.

Love the books but this voice is wrong for it

I love Shaun’s books and I really was looking forward to listening to this one. The day to day stories are great, you really become one of the town’s people. It makes me want to move there.
The person reading it… sorry to say it spoilt the story for me. Too hurried, especially for this slow book, too cheerful, too on the nose. You need someone with the same wry humour as the writer.
