Summary

Novodobé shakespearovské milence nerozděluje jako jejich původní souputníky nenávist mezi rody, ale nenávist rasová – židovské děvče Ester a árijský maturant Pavel prožijí svou tragickou lásku za stejně tragických okolností protektorátu. Tma je ústředním motivem rozsahem nevelké novely. Za tmy v parku se poprvé setká mladý nezralý student Pavel meditující o životě a cigaretách a židovská dívka Ester, která se ráno vyhnula transportu odmítnutím poslušného vykonání příkazu nastoupit. Za tmy ji ukryje na půdě jejich činžovního domu a za tmy ji také po dobu několika dnů navštěvuje. Za tmy spolu prožívají první milostné vzplanutí a politická tma je svírá čím dál tím víc. Je totiž období heydrichiády a Pavel denně slýchá jména lidí popravených za pomoc parašutistům, kteří uskutečnili atentát na zastupujícího říšského protektora, případně atentát schvalovali. Dusná atmosféra pomalu vystoupá až na půdu k Ester a ta se rozhodne jednat. Příběh se řítí do svého tragického závěru, ale Pavlova schovanka mu předá něco, co neměl, touhu žít.
