About this listen

In this work, Horace Rumpole returns to delight us with seven new cases. We find our hero jousting with the Devil, being wooed by a beautiful violin player, and even up before the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Bar Council.

When the chapters were placed roughly an hour long on previous Rumpole books (often only a few minutes before the end of a story) there seem some sort of erroneous logic. However, the chapters of this story range from 25mins to over an hour in no sense whatsoever. a book of six short stories broken up into as many chapters would make sense and you wouldn't have to jump to pause at the end of each tale. Please sort this out...and fire you're editor!

Excellent, only spoilt by chapter placing!

Some reviewers have complained about the sound levels. I conclude these must have been resolved. Timothy West’s excellent narration is crystal clear (as of June 2022). The six stories in this collection are, in the main, very enjoyable. The last one is particularly good. All hail Rumpole

Superb + sound levels are now fine

The best Rumpole book I've listened to so far and the best narrator as well in Timothy West. His soto voce is sometimes a little too soto voce when I'm driving but that's a minor quibble.

The best Rumpole so far

The narrator appears to move away from the microphone which means sometimes it is impossible to understand what he says and at other times it is really loud. And as I listen in bed, I have to constantly adjust the volume, so am not going to order any more books narrated by Timothy West.

Good stories well told. Rumpole is the barrister that one wants to defend you against the steamrollerof the law. Vivat Rumpole and all the little Rumpoles.

Timothy West perfectly brings Rumpole to life. Strangely I enjoyed the reading more than the full cast version. A wonderful escape in these troubled times.

John Mortimer again brings great humour throughout each case of the proceedings both inside and outside of Chambers and the Courtroom.

A comical insight of British Justice.

Thank you for bringing the inimitable Rumpole to my journeys on the London Underground; half expecting him to be striding along the District Line platform as my train pulls in to Temple.

Timothy West brings the characters to life brilliantly.

Brilliant in every way
