Der Dreißigjährige Krieg war verheerend für die Stadt, die 1637 nur noch 70 Menschen zählte. Nach seinem Regierungsantritt, 1741, verhalf Fürst Wilhelm Heinrich Saarbrücken zu einem enormen Aufschwung. Mit dem Baumeister Friedrich-Joachim Stengel entstand während seiner Regentschaft eine Barockstadt mit bedeutenden Bauwerken. Infolge des Versailler Vertrages kam das Saarland 1919 unter die Verwaltung des Völkerbundes. In einer Volksabstimmung 1935 entschied sich die Bevölkerung für den Anschluss an Deutschland. Im zweiten Weltkrieg erlebte Saarbrücken schwerste Bombenangriffe. 1957 wurde das Saarland zehntes Bundesland der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
