About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the bestselling author of WE ALL WANT IMPOSSIBLE THINGS (Richard & Judy Book Club 2023)

"Oh, honey," I say. "I'm sorry. Don't worry about me! I'm totally good. I'm so, so happy to be here with you."

This is how it is to love somebody. You tell them the truth. You lie a little. And sometimes you don't say anything at all..."

For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their rustic beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, its quirky furniture and mismatched pots and pans greeted like old friends.

Now, sandwiched between her children who are adult enough to be fun but still young enough to need her, and her parents who are alive and healthy, Rocky wants to preserve this golden moment forever. This one precious week when everything is in balance; everything is in flux.

But every family has its secrets and hers is no exception. With her body in open revolt and surprises invading her peaceful haven, the perfectly balanced seesaw of Rocky’s life is tipping towards change…

Critic reviews

'Sandwich is joy in book form. I laughed continuously, except for the parts that made me cry. Catherine Newman does a miraculous job reminding us of all the wonder there is to be found in life.' ANN PATCHETT, New York Times bestselling author of Tom Lake

Can’t say I was totally absorbed by this book, but enjoyed the familiar exchanges in the whole family.

Family reality

Great narration and a gorgeously written story full of pathos and wit. Really easy to listen to & sometimes reminiscent of holidays at the beach.

Tender story

Loved this. It just got better and better. So relatable as a Middle Ages woman. Sobbed at the end. Couldn’t recommend enough.

Absolutely beautiful

I chose this based on reviews in the media - i expected something with more substance. V bland.

Not what I expected

I dont really know if I trust Rocky. The main character. Shes phoney. It has so many layers. Like a sandwich. But its a brutal and beautiful story of motherhood, marriage and family.

Wonderful voice actress and overall a really good story about motherhood, marriage and family secrets

Listened thru once and then began again immediately. The narrator is magnetic and the story, sumptuous. Love this book. It’s my comfort book.

Perfect and vivid

Only finished this book because I had paid for it TBH. A little insubstantial and self absorbed.

I was left wanting more.

Captured my own life experiences so aptly and eloquently despite different contexts and worlds, fabulous read and listen

Resonated with real life

The only thing I didn't like about this book was how short it is! if you're a mum, or menopausal, it's pretty hardhitting, but also hilarious. It's a very warm book, not at all cynical. Quite a small, domestic realm but so completely entrancing within that. Also made me want to go and eat lobster in Maine. The narration is so good that you don't even notice it's there. It feels more like a conversation than an audio book. 5 stars!

Devastating. Outstanding.

perfectly serviceble novel, but didnt come close to the rave reviews in the papers. rather disappointing. the 'it's darker than it seems' moments were not a surprise. and the safe 'middle class family on holiday' moments were cloying. i read a lot of this genre... but for me, this author didnt deliver

didnt quite live up to the reviews
