In May 1982, Captain Roger Field, The Blues and Royals, attached to HQ 5th Infantry Brigade, sailed on the Queen Elizabeth 2 as part of the second wave to liberate the Falkland Islands. Surprised by what he saw at Brigade HQ, he started writing a diary.

His journey took him to Fitzroy as the Argentinean aircraft struck the landing ships Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram. A chance meeting led him to fighting alongside the Commanding Officer of 2 Para at the Battle of Wireless Ridge. When the commander of one of the four attached armoured cars of The Blues and Royals was knocked out part way through the battle, Roger took command of that Scimitar. Next day his Scimitar was at the very tip of the spear as 2 Para and The Blues and Royals led the victorious charge into Port Stanley.

‘Revisionist’ in places and always refreshingly candid, this account is unique as it describes the War from the viewpoint of a staff officer, infanteer and armoured vehicle commander. A gripping listen.

throughout the story you can feel the frustration with some senior officers either not being present or worrying about decision making. Despite this the storyline shows how when combined and integrated the joint forces worked well together getting on with the job in hand. A good read for anyone interested in the Falklands war.

Such an interesting and lesser known story from the Falklands War. Made all the more enthralling by the way it is narrated. The right amount of contempt for his seniors and compassion for his peers was shown in the way the narrator, Kerry Hutchinson, expertly navigated the text. Gritty, heartfelt and warming.
Very Highly Recommended.

Having been born during the Falklands I've read a fair few books on it yet this gives a very personal account and one from a very unique perspective: cavalry officer attached to a Brigade HQ, then acting as a liaison with the Paras, to then commanding an armoured car as a battle casualty replacement. Roger is very obviously a character - arguably the stereotype of the cavalry officer - and this book is all the better for it with numerous quips and criticism where due. Superb narration too - the narrator got it spot on!

A fantastic account of a little known about war, writen beautify. I really enjoyed this book, and felt like I was right there with Captain Field. what a great listen!

I really enjoyed this, a personal account of an officer on the sharp end of things. There is just enough military jargon that it does not interrupt the flow of the narration. The author is honest and at times critical of his superiors, this is a fresh perspective on the conflict. I found myself looking at maps of Wireless Ridge to appreciate the terrain and just how good the vehicles were in their role to support the troops.

I love this telling of the war from someone who was there. evertime I heard all I wanted to do was give my talk. after listening to so many first hands accounts off gousse green and other attacks that were going on. listening to just how the armoured car simmitars crunched the argies but didn't do the same in other attacks just because the brigadeer was to so called busy to listen.

As a CVRT crewman of 12 years I found this a fantastic read.
I loved the amount of detail that the author gives in every moment.
And how it's delivered in true Cavalry style. The depiction of the failings of senor leadership was no holes barred as is should be.
And the aftermath and feeling felt by the author are relatable after my time in Iraq and Afghan.

All in All a fabulous book I'll recommend to anyone.
