About this listen

When your fairy godmother threatens to enslave you with a curse - when a malevolent piper solves your rat problem but steals your children - when you seek revenge on the prince who turned you into a frog - who can you turn to in your hour of need? The band of scoundrels known far and wide as the Bastard Champions - the swashbuckling trio who travel a world of legend, seeking adventure and righting wrongs - as long as there's enough gold to be earned. They are Jack, the seemingly unkillable leader whose ever-present grin belies a dark past; Marie, who fights with fury but battles more fiercely to control the beast within; and Frank, the master of logistics, whose cloak hides horrific scars that are far more than skin-deep. As they slash and scheme through kingdom and village alike, the Bastard Champions uncover tantalizing clues to their ultimate quarry: the powerful Blue Fairy, who has made each of their lives a living hell.

Second Hand Curses adds a dash of sly wit and a heaping portion of action to the fairy tales you thought you knew.

How to stop curses

Rather to my surprise, I adored this book. It gallops along at a fair pace and some of the background of the characters is filled in, if only lightly.

Although I don't really like multiple narrators, this was handled with panache and style. Also not at a speed to detract from the book.

It's funny and lighthearted, regardless of some of the situations the characters find themselves in.

Highly recommended.

Pure Awesomeness

This book has been a wonderful read; a masterful spin on the old tales. The writer constructed his storyline well and the narrators delivered expertly

not what I expected

this certainly wasn't what I expected and although I found it hard to get into I'm glad I persevered. it's all centered around fairy stories that have a negative twist and three characters try to sort them out.
The blue fairy has altered normal tales ie cinderella is destined to be her captive once the ball is over, the pied piper is a serial child kidnapper, ..... so you have Jack (hack and the beanstalk), Frank (frankinsteins monster), and Marie (beauty and the beasts daughter) are the three unlikely hero's.
sounds odd and it is, but it is performed very well

Brilliant

Drew Hayes has one of the sharpest minds and wits of our generation. If anyone likes anything fantasy or superhero based and has a good sense of humour then you need to read anything written by him. I’ve been gripped by every book I’ve listened to so far, even on the 3rd reading! Second hand curses is masterful and builds characters better than anyone else. I’m very jealous of those who haven’t read it yet and get to experience it for the first time.

Fairy stories revisited

Very enjoyable listen old stories with a new twist for adults only not the version you heard as a child rather more revenge and justice without the happy endings normally associated with this type of tale

Interesting take on classic stories

Easy, good narrator and a good story. I like the behind-the-scenes point of view, and the moments of recognition when a character turns out to be a known part of another story.

Great execution

A fun subverted fairytale book, one of the better ones I've read The 3 main characters are all well developed, and a fairly satisfying ending, though it did end in a very openway that suggested a sequel that there is no intention of being written, so that's a bit odd. There are many individual fairytales addressed I think 1 per chapter, each twisted to a sinister outcome that our mercenary heroes will resolve. The one downside is how conveniently things always worked out for them, though they do explain it away to a certain degree.

I did enjoy it, the audio narration was very good with 3 performers and each chapter being its own little adventure meant it worked well with my listening routine. For all that though I doubt I'll read it again and have no particular plans to seek out more by the author.
