Der Adel plagt sich mit der Planung für das große Silvesterfest, als unter mysteriösen Umständen eine Leiche gefunden wird. In den Händen des vermeintlichen Mörders finden sich Papiere, die den Präsidenten des königlichen Gerichts Don Rafel Massó i Pujades, genannt Senyoria (=Seine Gnaden) schwer belasten.

Am letzten Tag des Jahres 1799, an dem das herrschaftliche Barcelona nur das rauschende Fest zur Jahrhundertwende im Sinn hat, kommt eine Lawine ins Rollen, die Don Rafel trotz bester Beziehungen nicht mehr aufzuhalten vermag.
