About this listen

As he teetered on a narrow rock ledge, a yak's bellow short of the stratosphere, with a rubber mask strapped to his face, a pair of mittens the size of a sea lion's flippers, and a drop of two kilometres below him, it's fair to say Mark Horrell wasn't entirely happy with the situation he found himself in.

He had been an ordinary hiker who had only read books about mountaineering. When he signed up for an organized trek in Nepal with a group of elderly ladies, little did he know that ten years later he would be attempting to climb the world's highest mountain.

But as he traveled across the Himalayas, Andes, Alps, and East Africa, following in the footsteps of the pioneers, he dreamed up a seven-point plan to gain the skills and experience which could turn a wild idea into reality.

Funny, incisive, and heartfelt, his journey provides a refreshingly honest portrait of the joys and torments of a modern-day Everest climber.

Mountaineering books are most often written by superstars of the climbing world or professional adventurers. This one is different, it tells the story from an everyman perspective - a guy that started from simple hillwalking and ended up on top of Everest. The author took a commercial expedition route to achieve this, which again makes it very relatable. If me or you wanted to do something like this (provided we had the guts and stamina required) this is how we would most likely do it.
I really liked author's attitude to climbing - lets take it as far as we can while still enjoying it. No pressure to get "the result", no going beyond what's individually possible to prove a point. In this case it worked out so well done for taking it to the top. Many people with a similar dream will not be able to achieve it even if they did everything in their power to do so. And that's ok too. Only go as far as you can still enjoy it and come back alive. 100% agree with the observations in the epilogue.

Very relatable

The narrative set out from the very beginning was engaging and “can you climb Everest’?
Subtle historic events filled with stories and antidotes keeps you poised and turning the page. Not a big book reader myself, however this was a book I did not want to put down.
Thank you Mark Horrell for your story.

Everest at it’s best

An interesting read as someone who has aspirations to start the journey to Everest. Mark’s story is intertwined with the history of mountaineering. Both of which are fascinating!

This book is a must read for any hill walker/Munro bagger that aspires beyond what most people consider possible. It’s a Humble, honest, funny, detailed account of ones man’s pursuit of that "just a little bit further" attitude any keen hill walker will know all to well.

I loved this book, start to finish, so many books sadly in this genre are comprised with tragedies therefore it was really refreshing to come across one that was the opposite.

I hope anyone who reads this will enjoy it as much as i have.

Well done Mark Horrell you have a new fan in me and thank you for taking the time to share your experiences.

When ordinary becomes extraordinary.

Fantastic listen bringing Everest into the realm of a Uk hillwalker. Can someone who climbs Snowdon really have aspirations to summit Everest? Takes the listener on the journey but also provides the backdrop of how commercial guiding is shaping Nepal. Highly recommended, especially if you’ve ever thought “could I?”

Everest - could I? Should I?
