Editor reviews

Certainly the most prominent and prolific detective in literary history, Arthur Conan Doyle's eponymous Sherlock Holmes holds the distinction of having been portrayed in more films than any other fictional character. In his heyday, Holmes was so popular that Doyle, bowing to public pressure, was forced to resurrect the character shortly after killing him off. Exploring the Holmes legend, actress Ellouise Rothwell discusses how Doyle's own biography and literary influences helped forge the character, and examines popular depictions of Holmes throughout history, including the origin of his famous deerstalker cap. The ebullient Rothwell strikes an even pace while, nevertheless, packing in a wealth of information.

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)
