About this listen

It is 1895, and Sherlock Holmes’s new client is a High Court judge, whose free-spirited daughter has disappeared without a trace.

Holmes and Watson discover that the missing woman—Hannah Woolfson—was herself on the trail of a missing person, her close friend Sophia. Sophia was recruited to a group known as the Elysians, a quasi-religious sect obsessed with Ancient Greek myths and rituals, run by the charismatic Sir Philip Buchanan. Hannah has joined the Elysians under an assumed name, convinced that her friend has been murdered. Holmes agrees that she should continue as his agent within the secretive yet seemingly harmless cult, yet Watson is convinced Hannah is in terrible danger. For Sir Philip has dreams of improving humanity through classical ideals, and at any cost …

A good tale - this Lovegrove writes some of the best Sherlock Holmes stories…
Narration is excellent, which makes the mispronunciation of certain words - environs, penchant etc.. - all the more surprising and comical! But a very good audible…

Good fun

I have listened to a number of the James Lovegrove books and they are excellent. The narrator, however is rather odd. The character voices for Holmes and Watson are consistent and excellent. All the others seem to be a variation on an Irish accent.
Then we have very strange pronounciation of well known words that are frankly bizarre. Does he do this on purpose and why were these not picked up by the producer?
The stories are excellent but often spoiled by the narrator

Good story but bizarre narration

Had me gripped till the end. As usual very well narrated. Good storyline. Holmes mentally and physically challenged

High action

...but in some parts Doctor Watson is a bit too dense for my liking. And had reacted the way he did in some scenes during the time he fought in the war, I seriously doubt he would have survived, let alone saved any of his comrades.

A good story well told but...

Let's keep it simple..................

Waiting for the next one

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Lovegrove’s ‘Holmes’ books, but I think this is my new favourite. The narration was excellent and the story was straightforward and gripping throughout. If you’ve enjoyed these before, don’t hesitate on this one.

A new favourite!

It was one of the best non ACD books. Apart from some odd pronunciation I enjoyed it but the bit I did not like was portraying Watson as very slow to take action. As a military medic he would have acted quicker.

Good story

Superb, perfectly written in the appropriate style. I always look forward to Lovegrove's Holmes novels - I've got most of them in my library - but the problem is I tend to finish them too quickly: once I start, I can't stop 😊

Lovegrove never disappoints
