Summary

The perfect boyfriend...or the perfect liar? Should Have Known Better is the tense new psychological thriller by A J McDine.

It’s the moment single-mum Kate has been dreading. With her only daughter, Chloe, about to leave home, she’s terrified by the prospect of an empty nest. That is until she meets charming lawyer Adam. He could be the perfect catch - if it wasn’t for his clingy son.

Because Ben has a crush on Chloe. A crush that is fast becoming an obsession. Flattered by the attention, Chloe is happy to string him along - for now at least. But Kate can see the danger signs, even if her daughter can't. And when Chloe’s life begins spiralling out of control, Kate must make a choice - trust her instincts or lose her daughter forever....

DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE MY HEADPHONES OFF!

I absolutely LOVED this book. As soon as I put my headphones on, I didn’t want to take them off. I found myself thinking about the characters while I was supposed to be working and it got to the point where I was grabbing my headphones at every opportunity, even in the few moments it takes to make a cuppa.

I love thrillers because I like hunting for clues and trying to figure out who the perpetrator is, and while I still enjoy thrillers I figure out, I’m always a little disappointed when it’s obvious from the outset. With SHKB, I was convinced it was going to be one of those, I was sure I could see what was coming. But as the story unravelled, I became more and more uncertain until, in the end, I had no idea which way it was going to go.

For me, that’s the sign of a very well-written and well-executed thriller: when you’re left guessing right to the end, drawn deeply into the lives of the characters so you think about them and root for them even when you're not listening, and you're on the edge of your seat to reach the exciting conclusion.

I read a lot of thrillers, this is the second I’ve read by AJ, and she’s up there with the best. I’ll definitely be buying more of her books.

Gripped from the start

Before finding this book to listen to, I had tried 5 others and just couldn’t get into them. However from the very first chapter of this one, I was hooked! Great story line, brilliant narration, and another author found that I will now listen to.

Great New Author

This is a new Author for me and was free so thought I'd give it a whirl! Brilliant, well paced and well defined characters. I guessed who it was fairly early but it didn't detract from the story. Also great narrator. One to watch.

Good writing but predictable story

When I began listening to this book I was very pleased at the form of writing used and the friendly narrative.
The writer introduced some potentially interesting characters and I hoped for. An interesting storyline with twists and turns and possible suspense.
However, this is where I was let down by a predictable plot and a ‘girls own’ storyline..
each possible problem was immediately solved and had the feel of a ‘gung ho and hockey sticks ‘ schoolgirls 1950s storybook.
The mother , grandfather and others were very old fashioned And needed an ‘ edge’ .
Each dilemma could have contained unexpected twists, real danger and not solved quite so quickly.
I wish this author well as my critique is designed to help her write a best selling book. As I noted her writing is excellent. It is interesting and accessible - just work on a darker plot with unexpected twists and turns. Readers like shocks and surprises not cosy outcomes. I wish you luck with future novels.

Slightly predictable but worth a listen

An easy lesson that keeps you engaged however, about halfway through you may be able to guess the ending/plot.

Great book

I found this difficult to stop listening to. I fell in love with the characters. Really well written and worth listening at night into the early hours feeling tired the next day.

Worth a listen

Not as bad as some of the negative reviews I saw, enjoyed it more than I thought, until the end was, as is usually the case with books like this, was disappointing. Mummy saves the day and they all live happily ever after, wish I could find a book with a darker ending. Also, I really wish narrators who struggle with foreign accents would just avoid trying, it’s so distracting and pulls you out of the story - this happens with so many audio books- the narration is fine and doesn’t draw attention to itself, until the narrator starts trying to pull off a ridiculous accent, your ordinary voice is fine!

ok for a freebie

It's tolerable as it is free but I would have been fed up if I had used a credit on this.
