About this listen

Poppy never imagined she’d move to the English countryside and fall in love with a smug, demanding, ginger-haired male. Of course, that was before she discovered that she’d inherited a cottage garden nursery and before she met a certain talkative orange cat. Now she’s embracing a new life filled with rambling roses, fragrant herbs, warm summer days…and weeds (lots of weeds), as she attempts to restore the neglected cottage garden to its former glory.

When she lands her first gardening job at a beautiful country house, Poppy is delighted to earn some much-needed money. But she barely sets foot in the flower bed before the meddling neighbour drops dead in front of her - murdered by a lethal poison. Before she knows it, Poppy is busy weeding out suspects, helped by mad scientist Bertie and his feisty terrier, Einstein, plus a whole host of nosy villagers…not to mention maverick crime author Nick Forrest.

But with her clients’ flowerbed mysteriously dying and red herrings at every turn, Poppy soon discovers that neither gardening nor sleuthing are as simple as she thinks....

A great new series. I always know that I'm going to be entertained when I pick up a H.Y. Hanna book. There will be lots of humour and a good mystery with quirky characters. I enjoyed this book as much as the first. Pearl Hewitt is a very popular narrator and I always enjoy her performances.
Looking forward to reading more!

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reading audio copy.

This author has captured the way to write really good novels I think I have read all of them now. Her stories are such that you must read all I have loved all of them

H.Y. Hanna has recently cornered the market in ditsy heroines who solve mysteries. The latest such protagonist, Poppy, is learning to garden very quickly having inherited a cottage in a village, having lived in town until now. Along with a garden in need of restoration she finds eccentric neighbours, the odd body, and a large demanding tomcat. Not only does she investigate the murders she stumbles across, she's trying to find out about her own history and her unknown father.

Poppy is sweet and gently amusing and sometimes irritating in her dogged pursuit of red herrings, very much like Hanna's other heroines - if she were to get them together we'd have trouble telling them apart. Nevertheless, these are very goodhearted, cosy stories, excellent for drifting off to sleep with and a pleasant panacea for daily woes. They are read very well by Pearl Hewitt, who has voiced all of Hanna's books and has an excellent line in cat conversation.

My only caveat, and it's a purely personal one, is I dislike punning titles - I can't quite remember how I persuaded myself to listen to a book with such a title, but I'm glad I did.

Charming and cosy

These stories are just plain silly and would benefit from a good proof reader/editor to sharpen the writing and spot inconsistencies. However, the main characters and the animals are adorable, well maybe not Nick, but he is tolerable. Some of the scenes are laugh out loud absurd. If the facts about the plants are accurate it is educational. The murder provides a focus for the plot but there is nothing gruesome about it. Even the rats are referred to kindly. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Another enjoyable Hanna/Hewitt production
