About this listen

The Sunday Times best seller.

From the back of the van to the front of the bar, from the hotel room to the emergency room, Mark Lanegan takes us back to the sinister, needle-ridden streets of Seattle, to an alternative music scene that was simultaneously bursting with creativity and saturated with drugs. He tracks the tumultuous rise and fall of Screaming Trees, from a brawling, acid-rock bar band to world-famous festival favourites with an enduring legacy, and tells of his own personal struggles with addiction, culminating in homelessness, petty crime, and the tragic deaths of his closest friends.

Gritty, gripping and unflinchingly raw, Sing Backwards and Weep is about a man who learned how to drag himself from the wreckage, dust off the ashes, and keep living and creating.

A brilliantly read, brutally honest story. Love his music (not the drugs) . R. I. P Layne

Couldn't stop listening. On the one hand a music biography, on the other a vision into the mind of a drug addict with ravenous drive & single minded ruthlessness. A brilliant & brutal account of a tortured youth.

Brutal

An honest, insightful, miserable look into the life of the only vocalist to rival jeff Buckley's brilliance. gut wrenchingly sad and twisted, funny and very addictive. this is by far the best autobiography I've ever encountered. and hearing Lanegan himself reading it, you can't help but feel like he sees you as a valued friend as he walks you through his horrendous addiction, and the highs and lows of being arguably one of the top 3 most important Seattle musicians to break out in the early 90's

Honest

The most brutally honest, dark and humorous rock bio you will ever read.

Forget the usual glamourised rock and roll stories.

This is grim, dark… and beautiful.

Listen to Old Scratch while you slip into Sweet Oblivion.

The greatest rock bio ever!

Having Lanegan read his own words makes this amazing story perfect. Couldn't stop listening irrespective of how dark and twisted it got. Mark's writing style is spot on - witty, succinct - he never lost ne at any point.

Brutally honest, intense and really funny

Fantastic story read by the man who lived and breathed it, not just a great singer and lyricist but an amazing story teller.
