**THE BOOK FOR EVERY WOMAN YOU KNOW**
**THE SUNDAY TIMES STYLE: BOOKS OF 2025**

THEY'RE THE BEST OF FRIENDS. OR SO THEY SAY...
'Brilliant: so funny, so sad, so scary' Jacqueline Wilson
'It will resonate for all women, and it's so much fun' Marian Keyes
'Part whodunnit, part dark take-down of motherhood' Gillian McAllister
'Compelling, thought-provoking, unputdownable' Sarah Turner
'Universally empowering' Kate Sawyer

An intense heatwave. A high-stakes baby shower. Will it all end in tears?

Nicki, Lauren, Charlotte and Steffi have been friends since university. Now in their thirties, life is pulling them in different directions - but when Charlotte organises the baby shower of hell for pregnant Nicki, the girls are reunited.

Under a sweltering hot summer day, tensions rise - and by the end of the day, nothing will ever be the same. Someone started a fire at the house - and everyone's a suspect...

Is it Steffi, happily child-free but feeling judged by her friends? Is it Charlotte, desperate to conceive and jealous of those who have? Is it Lauren, who is finding motherhood far, far harder than she imagined? Or is it Nicki herself, who never wanted a baby shower anyway?

In the aftermath, the police put together the facts - but the truth will shock everyone. Even you.

BIG LITTLE LIES meets EXPECTATION in the incredible new novel from Holly Bourne - it's the book you'll want to listen to three times, then give to every woman in your life.

Absolutely brilliant, loved every second

I’m already a huge fan of Holly Bourne, but this story was extra excellent. It struck many cords but also feels like a key piece of writing for women, mothers and future mothers. I absolutely loved it. Bring on more adult fiction by Holly!

Good premise, relatable, funny, slightly annoying

The story is enticing and relatable, with good twists and turns. Find some of the narrator’s a little irritating (might have been better reading a hard back), and some of the writing is a little plain or immature. I get that the book is about miscommunication but I found some of the lack of communication so unbelievable it was annoying. Lots of good laugh out loud moments which made it overall enjoyable. Overall a good easy read.

Enjoyable listen and some really funny moments

Holly Bourne is a great writer and I did really enjoy this book but I found the ending lacking and a bit disappointing. That being said the four female characters were all really well developed and I was genuinely invested in their friendship and lives. There were moments in the book that as a mother I really resonated with and moments that made me laugh out loud. I do find it hard to believe that they would all be so forgiving at the end after the things that were said but I guess that is the thing with female friendships, they are messy and complicated! Overall I enjoyed the book and am keen to read more by Holly Bourne. I really enjoyed the narrator! and would recommend listening to the audiobook!

A fun, but insightful book on women’s friendships and having babies. A great listen.

I haven’t been well, so being able to, I binged on this over two days. I really enjoyed it. It’s fun, hilarious at times and even though I’m a good generation above the women in this book, I could relate to them in many ways. I did find myself really wanting to sit down with the new mums and reassure them. The only criticism is one of the narrators was terrible but the rest were great.

Brutally honest account of early motherhood.

Great listen. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved Lauren and the friendship group. Maybe not one for people thinking about starting a family.

A very well told drama

I really enjoyed the multiple perspectives and thought all four characters were really well realised. The character Nikki was absolutely awful! A terrible villain. All the others were very multifaceted. The story is gripping and kept me hooked to the end. The ending was a bit disappointing but not enough to ruin the book for me.

The narration was really good except for Nikki’s voice which was bizarre. She sounded like she had an extremely blocked nose and was putting on a really odd accent. She couldn’t pronounce any vowels properly? She said ‘foot’ like futt it went on with every oo/u sound and was so jarring!!

Would’ve made a good mumsnet thread

Engaging story with interesting (if a bit cliched) characters. The author has clearly taken inspiration from Janice Hallet in the interview/evidence sections but it felt a bit forced.
Some sections were a bit repetitive.
Narrators were good - although Steffi became Australian at one point. Not sure what that was about!

Gripping

Was such a great story, really relatable with accurate emotional details. As a woman in my early 40s the story resonanted with me!

A darkly hilarious twisty tale of motherhood and friendship

Races through this brilliantly performed audiobook which is a searingly honest and darkly funny whodunnit about a baby shower, the friends who are there and of the way that motherhood - or lack of it - affects them all.
