How do you build a life when all that you know is changing?

How do you conceive of love when you can no longer recognise those who mean the most to you?

A phenomenal memoir, Somebody I Used to Know is both a heart-rending tribute to the woman Wendy Mitchell once was, and a brave affirmation of the woman dementia has seen her become.

An insight into Alzheimer’s like no other

An incredibly moving autobiography of part of Wendy’s Alzheimer’s journey and an extremely insightful amount of information for those of us travelling this journey, in one guise or another.
The tips woven within the book are incredibly useful and the detail of how she overcame so many aspects of the loss of ability this disease creates draws the reader in to her world almost as if we were there with her. A book I have listened to twice and will do so again and again as I learn from Wendy’s experiences, made all the more poignant by her narrating the book herself. Wendy learnt a lot during the course of her Alzheimer’s journey and it caused her to change her mind about assisted dying, although she was unable to carry out her final wish of travelling to Switzerland. Instead she chose VSED (Voluntary Stopping Eating and Drinking) with the support of her daughters, a good friend and her GP. She passed away on 22nd February 2024, but her humour, words of encouragement and determination to help everyone suffering from dementia will live on through her books.
