About this listen

'Nobody in the world knows our secret ... that I’ve ruined Bev's life, and she's ruined mine.' Petra’s romantic life has always been a car-crash, and even in her sixties she’s still capable of getting it disastrously wrong. But then she falls in love with Jeremy, an old chum, visiting from abroad. The fatal catch? Jeremy is her best friend’s husband. But just as Petra is beginning to relax into her happy ever after, she finds herself catapulted to West Africa, and to Bev, her best friend who she’s been betraying so spectacularly. Meanwhile, on opposite sides of the world, two other women are also struggling with the weight of betrayal: Texan Lorrie is about to embark on the biggest deception of her life, and in China, Li-Jing is trying to understand exactly what it is her husband does on his West African business trips ... It turns out that no matter where you are in the world, everyone has something to hide. Can Bev – can anyone – be trusted?©2015 Deborah Moggach (P)2015 Bolinda Publishing Fiction Romance Women's Fiction Marriage

An ingenious plot

This engaging story explores the unexpectedly intense emotional life of a woman in her sixties. The plot is very cleverly constructed with numerous tributaries that connect in odd ways. Sometimes I had to suspend disbelief but my misgivings were skillfully managed. Josie Lawrence is very good indeed. She reads with wonderfully diverse accents and a rich baritone for the man ( who I found the least interesting character) She throws herself into every role with her well known exuberance and is sometimes very funny even though it is quite a dark tale.
I was never sure of the outcome and listened happily in long stretches. Ultimately the book feels a bit contrived
And more like a film plot than a novel.

Mediocre story, awful reading.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is not one of Deborah Moggach's best books, but it is o.k. The ending is something of a let-down and left me feeling dissatisfied. The story drags in parts. What really ruined it for me was Josie Lawrence's performance. She reads too fast and with an annoying "breathlessness" to her voice. I also did not like her attempts at difference voices for different characters.

Would you be willing to try another book from Deborah Moggach? Why or why not?

Yes, but not if read by Josie Lawrence.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Josie Lawrence?

Almost anyone. Patricia Gallimore is excellent.

Did Something to Hide inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

Josie Lawrence was so annoying I almost didn't finish this book but I wanted to know how it ended.

Unusual story

Would you consider the audio edition of Something to Hide to be better than the print version?

Yes, this was easy to listen to and quite a disjointed story so came over better audibly than in print.

What does Josie Lawrence bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She read the book beautifully, expressive voice with intelligent reading. No awkward pauses or unusual intonation. Brilliant.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Unusual emotional story giving wonderful descriptive tastes of Africa.

Disappointing

I've read and enjoyed a lot of books by this author. This was the worst! Self indulgent, going nowhere, failure to live up to its promise. Hard to finish but I did!
