About this listen

Born from a befuddled muse indeed....

These 12 short stories and one novella take you into the lives of people facing life-changing, unpredictable, and often strange inflection points in their realities.

These stories are pulled from a variety of speculative genres including sci fi, time travel, horror, clown noir and more; but they are tied together with the author’s sense of the absurd and his love of complicated, all-too-human (usually) characters.

The stories reflect the quirky nooks and crannies of the author’s mind: a historian who becomes increasingly obsessed with saving a doomed queen; a dolphin who sees herself in an old prophecy; a future where humans live on separatist worlds—some with excellent pizza; a clown PI who must investigate the murder of his oldest friend mentor; a president who learns that the devil’s promises have hidden hooks, and so much more.

Some are funny, some are suspenseful, some are dark. All of them will leave you thinking.

gripping

Where do I start... firstly I loved every story. I enjoyed listening on my drives to and from work and found myself debating wether I should go into my house or stay in the car until the next chapter on numerous occasions. I found myself laughing, captivated and in total silence in shock from 1 story to the next. highly recommended

A clever, entertaining collection

This is a varied and entertaining collection of short stories beautifully narrated by Liz May Brice. Cohen-Kiraly has a deft touch with stories that, while slightly genre-bending (speculative fiction, sci-fi, private dick noir, historical fantasy) all have humour and well-executed twists. Mix in generally likable point-of-view characters and it all adds up to a well-spent eight or so hours of listening. I especially enjoyed The Big Gumshoes, a detective noir fiction à la Raymond Chandler, where the "gumshoe" and most of the characters actually wear big gumshoes - because they are clowns. Two longish stories that feature the historical figure Lady Jane Grey caught up in the paradoxes of time travel, bear further development into a novel or a collection of linked short stories. The surprises and twists of these stories always seem organic when they are revealed, a true sign of a writer in control of his craft. I look forward to reading - or listening to - more by Cohen-Kiraly.
