About this listen

'This is the book that puts all the evidence before the people' Jean-Pierre Gazeau, uncle of Sophie Toscan du Plantier

'An outstanding and compelling read' Micheál Martin TD

'A comprehensive and compelling collection of circumstantial evidence' Irish Times

Journalist Senan Molony was the first national crime correspondent on the scene of Sophie Toscan du Plantier's brutal murder in December 1996, ahead of a chain of events that would shock the nation.

The 2024 death of prime suspect Ian Bailey reopens the case for Molony, who goes behind the scenes to tell the full chilling story - from first seeing the Englishman as someone with impressive inside sources, to his moment of awakening at Bailey's arrest for a murder the suspect freely wrote about in the national press.

The book charts the astonishing early days of a doomed investigation and times thereafter as Bailey - a violent misogynist and pathological liar - escaped charge or trial in Ireland despite convincing evidence.

Including interviews with Sophie's family, key garda investigators, local witnesses and Bailey himself, it explodes commonly held myths and brings to light fresh and disturbing disclosures, amounting to damning proof of guilt.

Detailed evidential account of the Sophie Toscan Du Plantais murder. The definitive account, I don't doubt the authors conclusion. Very well read.

Thorough and convincing portrayal of the murder

This is a very fine book, well worth reading. Senan Molony has cut through the nonsense and demonstrated beyond doubt that Ian Bailey killed poor Sophie Toscan Du Plantier.

The only mystery is why he was never charged, despite an abundance of compelling circumstantial evidence.

Great to finally get all the facts into this case. Guess they had to wait til Bailey was gone.

If you are like me and have followed the case with interest, this is a must read. Because Ian Bailey is now dead and Ireland have tough libel laws, the enormous amount evidence albeit circumstantial, against him couldnt be revealed. How this didn't go to trial is beyond me!

Excellent book! A must read to anyone following the case

Brushes over the incompetence of the guards, leaves out much of the facts that have appears on other similar works that may be used to question Baileys guilt as well as being littered small pointed comments about the authors obvious dislike of Bailey. Incredibly biased but worth a listen for those interested in the case.

Incredibly biased but worth a listen

This is a gripping listen. The language is sometimes a little too colourful, but the exposition is thorough and the overall thrust of the narrative leaves the listener in no doubt about the nature of Ian Bailey. The breaks between the chapters are rushed, but the narrator is excellent and the different voices bring a great clarity to the multitude of characters involved in this bleakest of stories.
