Summary

Two sisters, haunted by more than their past...

Just weeks after discovering each other’s existence, Jess and Hannah Ballard arrive at Fairhaven Hall, where they will learn the clandestine ways of the Durupinen, an ancient sect of women who control the Gateways between the worlds of the living and the dead. Though they are considered outcasts by most of their classmates, Jess and Hannah are determined to learn what they can to fulfill their responsibility to the many ghosts that haunt them. But danger, it seems, has followed them as closely as a shadow to their new home, and they have more questions than ever.

Who is the desperate child spirit pursuing Jess, and what do her terrifying visions mean? What has happened to Dr. David Pierce, Jess’ friend and mentor, who has suddenly and mysteriously vanished? And just what is it about Hannah’s unique abilities that has the other Durupinen frightened of her?

The Ballard sisters are about to find out, and the answers could destroy their newfound life before it has even begun. Spirit Prophecy is the second thrilling audiobook installment in E.E. Holmes’ award-winning Gateway Trilogy.

This narrator is much better than the other books.

I listened to all of the Jess Ballard books, and Ii am reviewing them altogether.
Good: A great idea for a story. It could have been confusing but easy to follow and well written. Make sure you start with Spirit Legacy - I started The Gateway Tracker book one, which was the fourth book! The story kept me listening, and I liked the main character. The ending of the series was very good. The story references genuine groups and myths but is unique.
Bad: A couple of the books had a different narrator who had a beautiful southern U.S. accent, which didn't suit the character's background, but at least she could do a cockney accent and a Scottish one. Most of the books were nattated by somebody who is offensively bad.
The character of Finn is just awful. He has no personality, is a stereotype, and says "properly" on repeat in the first two books. His character is made much worse by the terrible narration, and his accent doesn't match his coloquialisms.
One character is referred to as " Cat Tree Owner" by every character - for the record, nobody in England, Scotland, or Ireland would pronounce Catriona that way! Nor would an English man call a route a "rowt."
Every Scottish character was mentally disturbed. Again, this may have been the narrator's fault, but possibly not.
The story is good, but a couple of things were never explained, such as why nobody outside the Duropinan world wondered where cremated bodies went, or whether scouted grooms knew the truth.
The story was dragged out too long, and would have been better as six or seven books.

Having said all of this, I still feel that the book series is excellent, but the narrator is appalling

Couldn't put it down

Brilliant! not even my genre and woukdnt never be caught liatenkng to this stuff usually but Great plot, wonderfully written characters who you love by book 2 as if they were your family. Plot twists and turns and it very much feels like a roller coaster. Really.coulsnt put it down and would find any excuse to sneak off and listen to it at home as much as poss. Only annoying thing is the narrator who has a very young whiney voice that grates on your ears when you listen to it at night in bed but worse still her effort at a Scottish accent. she does the accent well to a point but over embellished the rolling 'R' sound and talks way to slow and articulated for a Scott. However she does well with some of the other voices and accents such as English. Im English and feel she got that and the cockney one right. Scottish is a hard one to master though even us here in England on thr birder of Scotland can't master it and I'm married to a Scott. at times the narrator has edited mid sentence so that half the sentence sounds quiet and relaxed as she reads and then thr volume and tone changes like she snorted coke mid sentence.

Great read/listen!

Enjoyed this very much, as mu ha s the first time i read it (paperback). Not a huge fan of the accents, and the narrator seemed to struggle with the male voices occasionally, but the narration was good overall and didnt take away from the story!

The Narrator is English

I really enjoyed this book. I love the whole series.
In regards to the narrator not being able to do English accents... the narrator IS English. Yes the Scottish accent is atrocious but her "American" accent is the fake accent. In fact you can often hear her English accent slipping through while she's doing the American accent. The reason it's narrated in an American accent is because it is from Jess' point of view and she's American.

Great story, not a great recording.

The book is excellent. The further misadventures of two teens thrust into a world of spirits for which they are ill prepared.

The recording, unfortunately, lets it down, the sound quality changes palpably, sometimes mid sentence. I was obliged a couple of times to consult the book in order to understand a word. The volume dips here and there. The English accents are gamely attenpted, and are no worse than Spike and Druscilla on Buffy. It’s not enough to impede and understanding of the text, but it is distracting.

great book, meh audio.

Narration was a bit of a struggle on this book as the narrator was not too great with British accents. The real issue though was the editing as levels and clarity fluctuate throughout and edits are very apparent. Sensitive as I may be to that sort of thing though, accents and sound quality aside, the story was still sufficient to hold my interest and I'm excited for the final book. I'll persevere with the audiobooks, but if narration and sound quality are deal breakers, I heartily recommend still reading this book and series.

a little disappointing

not as good as the 1st book in the trilogy. quite slow moving until the last few chapters which made up for it. sadly I did not enjoy the narrator's performance which actually spoilt the experience. dreadful accents and awful punctuation. if she narrates the 3rd book I will read it rather than listen to her again

Slow start, but it’s for a reason! I’m hooked!

I started reading this, due to it’s high reviews. I have to say, I was bit slow to get to the point of being engrossed - which is how I rate my books.

The story is not as dark as the subject matter would suggest and the story involves lots of wonderful friendships, humour and touching moments in real world based storylines (with the added fantasy on top).

But trust the writer, she/he is setting up a wealth of plots at the beginning (so might feel a little slow right at the beginning), but it means the story really is full of depth, intrigue and twists when you get passed the start! Trust the writer, he/she is great!

Really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. And having now finished reading book 1, I absolutely know that I am going to love this author and this series!

Buying book 2 immediately! Thank you for your wonderful story!
