About this listen

In the summer of 1139, there is a pause in the civil war racking the country. St. Peter's Fair attracts merchants from across England and beyond, promising to bring some much-needed gaiety to Shrewsbury—that is, until the dead body of a wealthy merchant is found in the river Severn. Brother Cadfael offers to help the merchant's lovely niece uncover the murderer, but as he searches for the killer, the merchant's wares are ransacked and two more men are murdered. Brother Cadfael suspects the girl almost certainly knows more than she is telling, and he desperately races to save her, knowing that betrayal can come from any direction—and even good intentions can kill.

What I disliked the most was the hideous, harsh voice that introduced and concluded the book, in contrast to the measured, mellifluous tones of Mr. Jacobi. Between these two aberrations, Mr. Jacobi read the narrative with consument professionalism which brought the tale to life. A first class performance which Ms. Pargeter had penned so beautifully. I can’t recommend this book highly enough (apart from the beginning and the end!😉).

I loved the Cadfael mysteries and Sir Derek Jacobi reviving his performance in them is a treat.

Sir Derek back in the habit

Brilliantly performed, tightly plotted and as intriguing as usual from Ellis Peters. Well worth a listen.

Little more than a short story but…

So much better with the proper welsh accent. Lovely though he is, this narration spoils the book for me.

Not the same as previous narrator

This is only the first five chapters! Derek Jacobi is excellent but for one of my credits I’d have liked the full book!

Where’s the rest of it?

Although an avid fan of Ellis Peters, I was sadly disappointed by the misleadingly short offering. beautifully read but very disatissfying. I won't purchase any more of my beloved Cadfael series.

i brought these as i had no choice to get the unabridged version but the story rally is the lesser for it. wouldnt waste your money unless you desperately need a book thats under 3 hrs.
