About this listen

What's it like to be the last Human?

And not even know you're Human?

Esna Donovan was stranded on a planet full of people that didn't look like her as a child along with her brother. Their father was murdered, leaving them sitting in their spaceship waiting for his return.

They remember almost nothing from before that time, when two Calavari who were business associates of their father took them in and told them they could never be seen outside their full body armor. They've honored their father's dying wish, living and working on the Calavari's farm while exploring the barren wastelands looking for bits of technological salvage from the time before the great cataclysm.

They don't know they're Human, just that they're different and they can't show their skin in pubic. The two siblings have lived almost their entire lives in their self-styled body armor and dream of leaving the farm and doing something that mattered...but there's nowhere to go. Nothing to do.

Then one day that all changes and Esna is set forth on a rollercoaster ride of a life she could never have expected when the word "Human" is once again spoken on the planet...only it's a word of rage and ear, with the local aliens trying to kill whoever it is applied to, though they've never seen one before.

Regardless, the word is tagged to her and she must run...with a little help.

Great setting, great story, great action!!

Firstly I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the second, in fact 2/3rd of the way through I went looking for the next instalment only to find that it is book 33!!!! Do not be put off by that though as this appears to be a spin off, I am completely new to the universe and had no idea.

The narrator was great with distinctive voices to help identify characters and handling voices of both sexes with ease.

I was given this copy free to provide a non-bias review but I have already added this to my amazon wishlist waiting for the next audiobook instalment.

Looking forward to the next book.

I actually liked the plot. There is not much happening except for Esna trying to escape with the help of someone else. We get to find out about the other alien species, who the enemy is, the history of the planet they are on and of the history of the person helping Esna.

I hear you ask why did I give it three stars if I liked it and looking forward to the next book? Well there are two scenes were the Alien that is helping Esna escape is a vegetarian/vegan. Now there is nothing wrong with that but when he start lecturing Esna of being a killer because she eats meat and telling her that he kills others who sell and eat meat, I found that a bit harsh. I let it go, but later on in the book Esna gets the same lecture and she is made to feel like a murderer. He says just because they don't speak doesn't mean that they don't feel. Well plants don't speak and they do feel. A research is done to show this. So this makes him a murderer too. I felt this was narrow minded and naive of the alien to think this. I mean you are telling me that all aliens who are allys in the galaxies are vegetarian! I believe that is wishful thinking. I hated how they made Esna into a murderer becuase she ate meat. They changed her perspective to suit there own belief and everyone else is a murderer if they did not listen and kept on doing what they did! What! I am sorry but that is unrealistic! I can imagine a species being vegan/vegetarian but not all species are the same.

Other then this it was a good book. I liked the narrator andI thought the characters were distinguishable.

A good start to an interesting Sci-fi

Aliens, action and adventure, what more do you need?

Good narration combines with good writing to keep you invested and wanting to know what happens next in the story. One of the foundations of the story the relationship between Esna and the help she finds is interesting and well written. The main characters are all well written and have good dialogue add to that the different voice for each character and species all with real emotion and inflexion adds to sense the setting is real.
I did not notice any errors in the audio.

This book is a good introduction to the setting as our viewpoint character has little knowledge about what is going on so we get to learn as they do. I am interested to find out more about this setting and the other stories in it. I am very much looking forward to the continuation of Esna ‘s story. Whenever Wayward Trilogy, Book 2 comes out.

I feel this could make a good film, TV show or game.

All and all an interesting taster of a series of books if this is anything to go by will be worth a listen.
