About this listen

Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place.

Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan.

Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie.

But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits. Jake had enemies, and now they're coming after Charlie. His uncle might have been a stand-up, old-fashioned kind of villain, but these are the real thing: rich, soulless predators backed by multinational corporations and venture capital.

It's up to Charlie to win the war his uncle started against a league of supervillains. But with unionized dolphins, hyperintelligent talking spy cats, and a terrifying henchperson at his side, going bad is starting to look pretty good.

In a dog-eat-dog world...be a cat.

So fun!

I really needed this - a good fun story. Good pace, nice story line, good characters (so many books I've listen too recently have had one or more tedious annoying characters), and good plot twists. The dolphins were an extreme delight - the first I've laughed out loud (ok.. slightly vocal chortle) in a very long time.

funny!

enjoyed the humor in this. the story was good and characters interesting. only minor flaws was while the narrator was decent there was little to no difference in "voices" of different characters. pace made this worse as he talks like he's in a coffee buzz. May wish to set to 0.90 on speed makes it easier to understand.

Taking over the world one dolphin at the time

Charlie is broke, but his life turns around when his millionaire uncle, with whom he has no contact, dies suddenly. Charlie is called to fill his shoes and be present at the funeral. This book is sometimes silly but very entertaining at poking fun of great schemes to take over the world. The dolphins are great!

A genuinely hilarious take on supervillains

Some parts of this audiobook caused me to get some really odd looks from other road users as I laughed hysterically to myself, alone in the car. It is a really fun listen, brought to life by Wil Wheaton in his familiar energetic style. I love this author, and can’t wait for more from him. He’s fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I really recommend this one.

Not sure where this came from, but loved it!

So an e-mail pops up saying there's a new Book from Scalzi. I've enjoyed his previous books so I buy it without actually looking at it or reading the preview. So I was a little shocked when a few weeks later when I find the time to listen. Totally brilliant, will re-listening again.

Great reading by Will Weston, he does a great job.

Great journey, sloppy end

really really enjoyed this book except two things. the narration was jarring and the end was incohesive.

it was a fun and crazy story in the best possible way that perhaps just got a little out of hand.

It's Not Too Short!

If about 1.5hrs before the end, you begin to think the book is too short, stick with it! It isnt! There are some twists I didnt see coming, and it wraps up nicely. It's a short, fun, entertaining tale! Highly recommend!

Such a fun book to listen to

This is my first John Scalzi book, and I can definitely say that it won't be my last. It was such a fun read, topped of by the excellent narration by Wil Wheaton. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a tongue in cheek, laugh out loud and zany experience. Thanks to John and Wil for this great read.

Wil Wheaton

I enjoyed the story, Mr Scalzi inventive as ever, but ffs, enough of Wil Wheaton! He's terrible! He's ruined so many JS stories for me. Horrible voice, annoying accent (tbf, I don't suppose he can help that!) but his over-acting is awful. And he's supposed to be a actor! I shall be avoiding his work in future.
