Summary

In 1978 East Germany, nothing is at it seems. The state's power is absolute, history is rewritten and the 'truth' is whatever the Stasi say it is.

So when a woman's murder is officially labelled 'accidental death', Major Karin Müller of the People's Police is faced with a dilemma. To solve the crime, she must disregard the official version of events. But defying the Stasi means putting her own life - and the lives of her young family - in danger.

As the worst winter in living memory holds Germany in its freeze, Müller must untangle a web of state secrets and make a choice: between truth and lies, justice and injustice and, ultimately, life and death.

Get ready for a shock

There is just one thing that reduced the enjoyment, having re-listened to the last three books in the run up to the release of this audiobook, I was shocked to hear a different voice, along was a different reading style. It took me about half the book to adjust. However good story.

Country Gripped by ice and snow

Just incredible story. … set in the winter icy grip of 1978/9… This series of stories just gets better… I cannot wait to listen to the next chapter. .. Karin as usual put in incredible life threatening moments by the Stasi and criminals… interesting poignant section of recent European history, which overshadowed the entire lives of East Germans. But history has moved on too quickly, so little known already about the politics and ideals of this point in time…….as soon as I finish this review, I’ll be downloading Book 6…

Another great cold war thriller.

I have heard all of this series so far and this offering is just as good , though it contains more swearing than any of the others. The continuing saga of Karin Muller, who once again encounters some old friends as she battles to do her job as a police detective, with the help and hindrance , in equal measure, of state security. A very interesting time in world history , the cold war, especially for me, growing up in that era and suffering as I do from Ostalgia! The narrator did a great job, though in the first book I found her hard to get on with in the beginning. The storyline is imaginative and holds plenty of action, with bits of emotion etc . So overall, yes, this book has it all and I have no problem in recommending it.
