About this listen

The Battle of Normandy, a pivotal military operation in World War II, took place from June 6 to August 25, 1944. Also known as D-Day, it marked the beginning of the Allied invasion of German-occupied Western Europe. The operation was meticulously planned and involved a massive amphibious assault along the beaches of Normandy, in northern France.

Under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Allied forces, consisting of American, British, Canadian, and other multinational troops, launched the largest seaborne invasion in history. They faced formidable German defenses, including fortifications, artillery, and highly trained troops.

Despite initial resistance and heavy casualties, the Allies managed to secure a foothold on the beaches. Over the next weeks, they expanded their presence, pushing inland and engaging in intense and costly battles. The Normandy campaign witnessed fierce fighting in hedgerow country, urban areas, and key strategic locations such as the city of Caen.

The Battle of Normandy concluded with the liberation of Paris and the establishment of a vital Allied beachhead in Western Europe. This success marked a turning point in the war, setting the stage for the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany and the restoration of freedom to occupied Europe.
