About this listen

It’s a worldwide test that everyone’s agreed upon. Its main purpose? Thinning out the human herd. The population was growing too fast. Death by starvation was more common than murder or accident. Changes had to be made. An initial strategy to decrease the population was used, but the outcry against it was too massive to dismiss.

Thus, the 12-mile course was created. In present day society, children between the ages of 12 to 16 are chosen randomly and thrown into an environment designed to kill all but the strongest. Those that live through the 12 separate challenges get to rejoin society. Those that don’t...don’t.

The course boasts a 36 percent success rate of a child finishing it alive. Chris, a boy on the cusp of turning 16, has finally been chosen to enter the deadly test. He must make his way through the 12 unique zones of the course without perishing, in order to be released and become a productive member of society. Yet, if he passes, will Chris even want to go back to the society that throws their young into a viable death pit? Would you?

Great book

Really enjoyed this book. At first glance it sounded like a "hunger games" copy but the story is actually unique enough to hold its own and I really enjoyed it. I had a lot of theories throughout the book and the ending was not as suspected and was actually one of those books that left you thinking about it for a while after. I feel the need to discuss it with someone else!! In terms of the audible narrarator, I really enjoyed his performance. I enjoyed all the different accents and voices he put on for each character. I would definitely recommend this book, it's length was perfect and the story line was full of action and deep thought. The characters felt evolved and i actually cared about what happened to them. Some scenes were pretty heartbreaking! I would recommend for sure!

Interesting premise, ending could have been better

The idea for the book was interesting and reminded me of the Hunger Games crossed with Stephen King’s The Long Walk. I think the ending felt rushed and missed opportunities for a more interesting finale. SPOILERS ALERT: For example, whilst listening I kept thinking that he would eventually find out that the real purpose of the course was to find out how candidates behaved and interacted with others eg honourably / honestly etc. I also thought that perhaps he might find out that all the candidates he encountered, including Theresa, were all just figments of the zones as well eg simulations to test Chris. Towards the end when the trial was introduced I began to think that perhaps Chris was still in the course and there was a 13th zone that no one talked about, and that it was a test to see if he would testify honestly, and to test to see if he would want to put the makers of the course in to the 12 mile course as punishment eg how vengeful was he? But turns out I was just overthinking it and so the ending felt a bit anti climactic and rushed and unrealistic. The voiceover also wound me up no end. The narrator rarely seemed to use intonation and everything he said seemed to be said in the same “upper” register without varying his voice. It hit better as it went on but I think maybe I just got used to it. Also, I feel like the narrator was trying out every accent under the sun for the different characters who bizarrely seemed to be from all over the world despite going in to the course together in one country. And the accents seemed to have no bearing on the characters eg Anthony was never described as Irish etc so I didn’t really see why it was necessary and as the accents were quite silly and stereotypical I felt it lessened the tension and made it funny which wasn’t intended. Theresa, who was supposed to be the love interest, sounded like a whiny kid!

SOOO GOOD

Brilliant. Adored Chris, some great characters, and some not so nice. Loved the way the stages happened (Don’t want to give much away), the way people interacted. The story line was well thought out and written. The ending was not what I expected, it was much better, you will see when you listen!
I will be listening to this again, that’s only happened with two other authors. You get more praise that that. Highly recommend a listen, in the meantime, I am off to hunt Wisteria D. Jones books.

Narration is awful

I think I'd have really enjoyed this story. Sadly, the narration is so wooden, I couldn't even listen through the second chapter. I'm sorry.
