About this listen

Imagine standing on a box in the middle of a busy city, dressed as a white-faced bride, and silently using your eyes to ask people for money. Or touring Europe in a punk cabaret band, and finding a place to sleep each night by reaching out to strangers on Twitter. For Amanda Palmer, actions like these have gone beyond satisfying her basic needs for food and shelter - they've taught her how to turn strangers into friends, build communities, and discover her own giving impulses. And because she had learned how to ask, she was able to go to the world to ask for the money to make a new album and tour with it, and to raise over a million dollars in a month.

In The Art of Asking, Palmer expands upon her popular TED talk to reveal how ordinary people, those of us without thousands of Twitter followers and adoring fans, can use these same principles in our own lives.

Authentic & inspiring

Beautifully performed, not read. 100% recommended. Was intrigued after seeing her Ted Talk, now I see what the fuss is all about, she's ace.

Listening to Amanda Palmer

This was my first audio book. Having not enough time to read the actual book. Decided to walk to work everyday and buy the audio version. Amazing, honest and raw book. Having Amanda read her story to you and sing too is perfect. Wonderful book.

Accept the Donuts!

Firstly: I love that Amanda narrated this herself. You can't tell that she is reading something to you. It feels more like a conversation.
Secondly: by the title alone I was worried that the book was going to be one of those 5 steps to improving your life by learning how to ask self-help type of books. It is in not. The book is made up of stories and experiences that have the theme or are loosly related to asking and the power of asking. It is at times humorous and at others very serious.
Thirdly: Amanda reminded me that it is okay to ask, it is okay to lean on the people around you as long as you do it with humility and gratitude. Live is hard enough - accept the help (or the donuts).

Didier soulier

Thank you Amanda you have inspired me to carry on with my songwriting when I really gave up on myself. I don’t not pretend to know you yet your book touched me and resonated with me on so many levels, this does not happen often, I think maybe your brutal yet real approche is maybe the culprit, anyhow I thank you so much for this book, I just don’t agree with you on one point, Neil like most man are not mind readers, but I hear you one should know how the other half feels and needs in time of distress. I love your fake police (not the word you used sorry already forgot) I always thought some day someone will find out I do not have any clue with what I’m doing most of time, I’m so glad Anthony is still with us, thank you for being you Amanda, I don’t think we would want you any other way. Didier

I found this book easier to read in bite sized chunks

Any additional comments?

I bought this to hear about "the art of asking" and ended up finding difference perspectives on multiple things but less than I'd expected on asking

a heartwarmer

a tale into real life situations stressing to rely on basic human emotions. trust is paramount and the ability to do so is reassured through the authors experiences.

Life lessons by Amanda Palmer

Listening to Amanda speak soothed my soul. she made me realise how cut off from the world I have become through fear of asking, speaking and connecting to people. Not just for the fans, as never hearing her music before, this has opened up a whole new musical chapter in my life too!
